I was just about to ask...

Just how much is 350k copies? It certainly does seem like a big number to me but can anyone tell me what's usual print for, let's say, Viz's Naruto or some other Yenpress mangas?

Here in Croatia we also have manga (a miracle, I know) and they are printed in 1500 copies per volume.

Last January, Viz Media said that Yu Watase's Fushigi Yūgi manga sold over 1.1 million copies in North America. With 18 volumes in the first series, that would mean that each volume sold an average of about 60,000 copies since Viz began publishing it in 1999 [and not 2003, thanks Calli].

Last October, Viz said that the Death Note manga sold over 1 million copies in North America. With 12 volumes total, that would mean that each volume sold an average of about 80,000 copies since Viz began publishing it in 2005.

I have no idea for manga, unfortunately. It's kind of tempting to ask about it over at Pimp My Novel now... There's a breakdown of a number of factors that figure into print runs for fiction here and here, but a) there's no concrete numbers and b) that's fiction, not manga, though some of the same principles may apply. At least the 350,000 run does make more sense in that context.

EDIT: Okay, Egan Loo found some real numbers, and Naruto at least probably falls in those ranges. (Though FY started publishing in 1999, not 2003.)

While I'm not real big on Twilight, I LOVE Yen Press. They're practically my favorite manga publishing company (Thanks to With The Light, Nabari no Ou, and Pandora Hearts)! And, though I dislike admitting it, the artwork for that Twilight manga actually looks GOOD! I hope they do a good job and hope that it sells well enough to make other fans happy (or bring in decent money).

Though I will admit Twilight is rather cliche and overdone. Heck, even I can come up with a better vampire story than it (which I will later on)! But I understand why Yen Press would want to market it in this fashion. The economy's pretty durn stupid and I think Yen Press knows that a lot of anime companies are dying (MOST OF WHICH ARE MY FAVORITES!!!) because of it, and they don't want to suffer and die too. And I'd be pretty durn heartbroken if Yen Press, my favorite manga publishing company next to Del Rey, died and went bankrupt (like Broccoli! Nooooo!)!

Though by the way, my friend Alex is a Twilight fan so she's going to be pretty happy to hear this (along with the release of volume 1 of Kuroshitsuji manga, also by Yen Press).

Yen Press is my 3rd favorite manga publisher (Viz and Del Ray ahead, though YP definitely has the best paper quality), so if this helps boost their profit and license more manga, I'm all for it. I'm loving Bamboo Blade, Higurashi/When They Cry, Soul Eater, and the light novels for Haruhi and Spice and Wolf.

I mean, I didn't like Twilight, just so we're clear, I read the first book and thought it was garbage. The beginning wasn't half bad, but Bella was stupid ("OMG, I'm so unattractive, even though several guys are interested in me!") and Edward is a stalker (which the author even admitted and thinks such actions are cool Shocked ). But if it boosts YP profit, go for it.

I hate Twilight, and I honestly don't care about the possible profits Yes Press could get for releasing a manwha/manga version. There are other series that can get a person interested in manga. Besides, why do some of you people want manga/anime to become extremely popular? I honestly like that it's a niche. It only matters that I like anime. Isn't that what matters? That you like it? Why should everyone else like what you like? The world doesn't always work that way.

Secondly, whether the artwork is good or not, that still doesn't change the quality of the story, which is garbage. Twilght sucks no matter what. I can't wait for this series to fall into obscurity. Meyer destroyed the image of vampires.

Yes, heaven forbid we want the anime/manga companies to make profit and not drop off the face of the earth, like several have this decade. You know, because THAT'S how the world works, make profit or go away. We're not talking about forcing everyone to like anime and manga, but there is nothing wrong with trying to expand the fandom. Quit overreacting.

After all, we're dealing with a world (at least, from my experience) that looks at people that don't watch sports as some kind of crazy person. Yes, I don't enjoy watching small people on a TV toss a ball around, there must be something wrong with me! Rolling Eyes Given that, I hardly think out of line for recommending anime and manga to anyone.

Welcome to Marketing 101, folks.

You know, Japanese publishers have been making crappy Manga based from some popular video games, movies, and such for decades. And how many people here complain and whine about it? So it's wrong for American publisher of manga trying to make some bucks based on a popular franchise? Talk about hypocrisy. Besides, Twilight has that Shojo Manga taste to begin with, so it's not surprising to be seen in comic format.

Those aren't vampires.

I hate the idea of this taking up a rack of space in the manga section. I also dislike Yen Press and have stuck to not buying thing from them.

Hopefully they put this near the horrible books so I don't have to see the brainwashed idiots.

Youkai Warrior- I agree with you in the second half. But I would like to see anime become popular only so one day the prices could be better.

The part of me who couldn't make it to page 30 of the first novel wants to facepalm...

Yet the part of me who likes Yenpress is thinking about at least 3 people she knows who would be interested in this...

...to continue refusing to help fund this franchise, or to possibly open some friend's eyes to 'manga' in a way that would actually spark an interest... my morals are VERY conflicted at the moment...

My opinions of the series aside, I also think 350,000 copies is a bit much. I mean, there's only a certain number of people who like Twilight and manga/manhwa, and I don't know if those who like Twilight will necessarily be open to the idea of it as a manhwa.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto likes Twilight? Seriously? (And I'm apparently the first person to comment on this)

Why so upset? There are plenty of worse manga. Though, I guess they don't have the built-in crossover fanbase. But still. You don't have to dig too far into the manga scene to find yourself surrounded by s***.

I usually don't pay too much mind to YP, they really don't produce much I like. Here's to their consistency with quality titles.

It's already at 4th place on Amazon's best selling books so I think the number of copies is appropriate.
It's being advertised mostly as a graphic novel rather than a manga so I don't think that any prejudice against anime will affect it's sales much.
