Now, admittedly, I simply don't have any of the experience necessary to answer the below question; but the question has been on my mind now -- in some form or another -- for quite some time. So I will just simply pop the question:
Who are the more passionate fans: Fans of the Naruto franchise, or fans of Haibane Renmei?

Now I realize that there might -- juust might -- be some fans of BOTH out there; but, that possibility notwithstanding, I nevertheless still put forward the above question. I should say, however, the the number of fans is NOT one of the criteria of the, ah, "measurement" of passion. Rather, IF one were to take an "average" fan -- if there is such a thing -- of both, then (in your experience) which one would MOST LIKELY be the more passionate?

This has to be one of the most eccentric thread titles I've ever seen.
How do you measure passion? If fan passion is measured in money spent on clothing and merchandise, and in cosplaying, then I don't think poor old Haibane Renmei stands a chance. Very Happy (Unless there's a hidden market for Hikari body pillows. Eww.)
Maybe the behaviour of respective fans is so different that there's no way of comparing their passion through ordinary observational means, and some serious psychological tests/PET scans are required.

@ailblentyn:
I take your point. One of the reasons that this thought has stayed in the back of my mind (as opposed to the forefront) is just as you say -- how to measure passion. I've always thought that I don't know because I don't associate with clubs and conventions. In the past, I've thought -- based on comments on these fora -- that hardly anybody liked Haibane Renmei, but such assertions of mine have been disputed by others. So I thought that I'd just put the question and see what sort of responses are generated.

IMO, Haibane Renmei pwns Naruto ... but its hard to make a fair comparison between a quiet, thoughtful anime on the one hand and a shaken can of carbonated water on the other.

??? One of strangest things I've read. In my experience it is always the other way around. Everyone likes Haibane, but hardly no one likes Naruto.

Wow, this has to be the weirdest comparison thread I've ever seen. And I've seen "Gundam vs. Wedding Peach."

In the wider world, compared with Naruto, probably hardly anybody liked Haibane Renmei, because hardly anybody has seen it. There is a big difference in viewership between a show broadcast on the Cartoon Network, and a show only released on DVDs. The original post said to discount numbers, though. This suggests to me, however, that mid-level Naruto fans are more likely to talk about Naruto than Haibane Renmei fans at the same level of passion would talk about Haibane Renmei, because the Naruto fans are more used to finding a receptive audience.

The user ratings at the ANN encyclopedia give Haibane Renmei a higher average rating than Naruto, but only half as many votes. I expect ANN users to be more likely to have seen Haibane Renmei than the average viewer.

I think we'll have our answer when Naruto's ended and been finished for a decade or so. Will it be a neverending nostalgia machine like Dragon Ball? Or disappear into the nerdiest corners of the internet like Kimagure Orange Road?

It's been 8 years since Haibane Renmei was made and 7 years since it's dvd release here, so I think it's stood itself pretty steady considering I see it continue to pop up in conversations and favourite lists. Plus, Funimation's reissuing it on dvd, so a whole new generation of fans'll find out about it.

Then again, you don't see many people wearing grey wings and tinfoil halos on the subways and calling themselves Haibane.

I think it's clear both have their passionate fans, but are very different sorts of titles that appeal to different fanbases with mild crossover [I find most Naruto fans I meet tend to only watch Naruto. Maybe Bleach, but mostly Naruto-- they need time to discover other things before we get back to them on Naruto being the end all of anime fandom].

It depends on the sort of passion. If you're talking about fans that practically live for their series, obsessively cosplaying, writing fanfics, drawing fanart, learning the jutsu, etc, obviously Naruto's fanbase blows Haibane Renmei's fanbase away.

However, Haibane Renmei fans have a different sort of quiet but intense passion. Most Naruto fans that claim it's the best anime ever haven't watched much other anime. In fact, once they tire of Naruto, they may stop watching anime altogether. Haibane Renmei fans, however, are usually serious anime fans and they truly believe that Haibane Renmei is really something special. I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally refuse to do Haibane Renmei fanwork because I know I could never make anything that would hold a candle to the canon and nothing I could write would be worthy of being associated with it. Haibane Renmei is one of the first truly spectacular anime I've seen, and to this day it is what I measure other anime against in terms of quality. Not the specific flavor of it, but the originality of it and the sheer talent of those who worked on it that shines through it. Naruto fans are intensely passionate now, but for most of them it isn't a long term thing.
