Well, to my knowledge, no one's getting killed from helicopter crashes making anime. (Not to make light of their deaths and all, just saying that they're really different in terms of direction and production.)

Then again, the issue with that incident is that producers were increasingly blasé about the safety and health of their people in the relentless pursuit of cutting costs, which is something that can happen to any business, including anime.

I hadn't realized this was coming out as singles rather than season sets. Is Nisekoi really popular enough to sell in this format?

I don't know how the anime is doing in Japan, but the manga usually hangs on somewhere in the middle in the Weekly Shonen Jump rankings. That it's stable but never excels indicates to me that Nisekoi has a dedicated group of fans but doesn't have that much appeal outside of them.

As for how Nisekoi does in the west, which I'm sure you're referring to, Viz's Shonen Jump apparently orders manga in order of popularity too, and Nisekoi finds itself at or near the bottom most of the time, often ranked worse than Bleach.

Hence, my best guess is that Aniplex is releasing Nisekoi in singles to see how well they sell and likely what buyers think of this series, releasing something small first to test the waters. Releasing a big box of discs all at once is a big risk.

According to someanithing, the Nisekoi anime averaged just over 6,000 sales per volume, so pretty solid, but not amazing.
