Episode 16

What should have happened at the end: spoiler[*Kaname strolls around but naked and goes up to man* " I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle."] It is funny because it kind of like time travel.

That would've been brilliant!

I liked this episode O.K.... which is pretty much my feeling of the show in general. It's O.K.
But the truth is that the teen drama would never survive in a show by itself and I've already annoyed people by expressing my views of how I feel the whole underwater world logic fails.
Together they somehow make it a slightly better show... but I do find myself seeing it in my queue and thinking something like... oh, this again.... *sigh*

... BTW, I don't know how it would make sensespoiler[ that she would have Ena because her mother was from the sea. They've already explained that the reason that they don't want women marrying land people is because their children do not have Ena. So this is something new and unexplained, not a normal genetic trait]

That would be nice, but this show is so damn focused on kiddie romance and DRAMA! The world is freezing over, sure, whatever, what we *really* care about is who Hikari, the most eligible teenaged boy this side of Justin Bieber, is going to end up with! Episode 16 annoyed me a little spoiler[very little plot development, and the show itself seems to be shipping Hikari/Miuna. Why else would they give us a whole episode of "look how cutely Miuna blushed around Hikari, look how cutely oblivious Hikari is, look how adorably they flirt, Character A reminds us that they can marry because they are not blood related, Character B points out their romantic tension directly, etc, etc"

I'm not completely against Hikari/Miuna, but a lot of fans are, and I was getting annoyed at all the shipping. Otherwise, this ep was Nagi_Asu's standard sweet moments with some interesting revelations at the very end:

1. Miuna gained the sudden ability to breathe underwater! This was a big "WTH???" moment for me. I figured that she swam to a place underwater that allowed her to breath.

2. Kaname's back! Yay! Very Happy]

Can't wait for next week! Hopefully we'll get more actual plot development.

This is pretty much my opinion in general. Miuna has grown to be the exact type of character that I really dislike: Completely infatuated about a guy and being insufferable because of it. The whole "farting shoes" would've been funnier if Miuna hadn't taken it so seriously and squealed every time her shoes farted.

I've generally liked the kiddie drama in this series, but I just never liked Miuna entering the love polygon. It was cute and relatively reasonable when she was a little girl fawning over a cool older kid, but now it's just obnoxious. I definitely didn't like that the episode spoiler[seemed to "ship" them together], in the ways Agent355 pointed out. I hope Miuna gets over that crush, because I honestly don't believe Hikari will ever see her as any more than a little girl and his family to boot. Actually, I'm hoping he doesn't. It seems to me that Miuna is just idealizing Hikari because of how she looked up to him when she was little, and is clinging to that idealization.

About Miuna spoiler[apparently becoming a sea person, it may be that the Sea God, having recovered his power, will allow for sea people's childrens to go back into the sea (which could also help with the declining population). I'm somehow hoping it's something along those lines, because from the get-go, I found it really unfair that sea people became estranged from their homeland, and that kids who loved the sea so much like Tsumugu and Miuna were unable to reach it because the Sea God decided to make Ena a recessive gene or something like that]

^^^ yeah, I hope it's something to do with the Sae God sensing how strongly they love the sea and that's what grants them spoiler[ena].

I have to admit that my patience for this series is starting to dwindle with the young love stuff. I'm mainly sticking with it because I want to see what happened to Manaka and hopefully be able to actually get a glimpse of the Sea God.

i'm thinking, if Manaka is "with" the Sea God then she may be influencing actions as well.

I don't know about the Sea God but someone needs to get after the civic works department. A multi-ton crane assembly comes crashing down because a little girl threw a shoe?

As for the growing ena thing. There's never been mention of someone getting it other than being born with it, and it needs to be hydrated in salt water often. Minua gaining it as a teenager is fully unprecedented, at least as far as the rules given to us so far go.

Of course as with most of the mysteries and wonders in this world, the characters will just accept it with little more than "that's interesting" and then move on to cooking dinner.

What about the original sea people? It was mentioned that normal people became the sea people.

Plot Summary: Long ago, humanity lived in the sea. But the humans who longed for the land left the sea behind. They cast aside the special raiment they'd been given by the sea god that let them live in the ocean...

The plot summary also says that Tsumugu befriends 4 girls from the sea. So there is that.

Maybe I became mistaken, but I thought there was implication that the sea people came from the result of people returning to the sea in the event like where the woman married the sea god. There is also the fact that humans evolving under water does not quite make as much evolutionary sense.

Even if all the current humans once came from people who lived under the water, then I would theorise that a time before that they lived on the surface and perhaps he saved them from an ice age or something.

I believe that the story goes something like "In the beginning, all humans lived unda da sea, then left the sea, then gave a maiden to the sea god who repopulated the sea people with her. But they are now dying off."

Maybe. Gods, I need to rewatch this show from the beginning again. A quest has been given and accepted. Smile

I'm kind of interested in why Miuna could spoiler[ breathe underwater]. Like many of you, I recall that, very early on, the "plot" dictated that spoiler[ people born of someone from the sea and the land could not return to the sea]. But did they ever specifically mention that the person would not have spoiler[ ena or was it just that the newborn "couldn't return" because of something like cultural stuff?]

I know I'm a bit late to the game in this thread (namely because I've been too busy to post. Anime cry), but one of the things I really love about this show is how they address things like racism, cultural differences, and conflicting goals between groups of people who live close to each other. For me, that's been the driving force that kept me watching it through the first half of the show. All of the spoiler[ "time travel", love themes, and general mystery ] has kept me interested along the way as the racial and cultural divides became less of a focus.

Miuna's little crush bothers me. I'm glad they're starting to address the "logistics" of what such a relationship could be. It's not just brushed off by the other characters as "ewwww!" or "tee hee! You like spoiler[your uncle]! I'm gonna tell him!" or something equally obnoxious or immature. Overall, I like how this series handles complicated things in a simplistic way. I'm looking forward to more, especially now that spoiler[ Kaname's back].

I thing Tsumugu is my favorite character. Does anyone here read comments on the Crunchyroll pages? That episode where he spoiler[ walked in on her] accidentally because he needed scissors, someone posted "I wonder if he ever got his scissors?". Laughing Many laughs were had that day. Also, as spoiler[a girl, I can understand why what's-her-name would ask him a question about her appearance. I mean, he was looking anyways and he's been a pretty honest, caring guy the whole show. Girls get concerned about these things. I'm glad they handled it they way they did.]

I just assumed that spoiler[Miuna's ena emerged as a result of nearly drowning. She even coughed out air bubbles, a common visual indicator of someone losing all of their breath. It's not everyday a half-breed tries to drown him/herself, so perhaps people made the assumption that they can't return to the sea? I forgot if the same thing happened when she was younger too though, if someone can double-check...] I'm not sure if Tsumugu's lineage has any significant sea-people traits remaining. Eye color (and culturally speaking, clothing color) kinda act as an unofficial indicator to me. Brown = land, Teal = Sea. Miuna and Akira both have this dull teal color which may indicate the strength of both traits. Tsumugu may not have any significant traits remaining.

Sometimes I just hate being caught up to a series because of moments like episode 16 of Nagi-Asu!

I did chuckle a little though when they mentioned the whole uncle/niece thing. I've been complaining about that since last week xD
