After a long hibernation... erm... let's ignore that... noone knows me anyway Anime smile;

I just watch Eps. 1-7 of Kanon, but before I give my own opinion about the show, I would like to clarify some misleading fact in the trivia before it goes out of hand Anime smile; and it goes a little something like this...

------------------------------------------------------------
【声】「*B君っ!」= Yuuichi-kun!
廊下に戻ると、不意に背中に声がかかる。= Someone called me from behind when I was about to go back at the corridor.
【*A】「振り返ると、美坂香里が立っていた」= As I turn around, Misaka Kaori was standing there.
【香里】「なに状況説明してるのよ?」= What are you narrating about? (Kyon-kun narrates a lot...)
【*A】「いや、別に」= Nope, nothing at all.

next one is......
------------------------------------------------------------
【香里】「ここが昇降口」= This is the entrance.
【*A】「それぐらい知ってるって」= I know that much.
【香里】「知ってる割には思いっきり校舎裏で途方に暮れてたじゃない」= Yet you still end up at the opposite side of the school, right?
【*A】「ぐは…見てたのか…」= Geh... You were watching me...?
【香里】「不審な行動を取ってるから、てっきりどこかの秘密機関から密命を帯びてここに潜入したんじゃないかって思ったわよ」
I thought you were acting strange, as if you were sent by a certain secret organization to infiltrate this place and observe our mysterious lives.
【*A】「俺は普通の転校生だ」= I'm just an ordinary transfer student.
【香里】「ちょっとがっかり」= I'm a little disappointed.

香里 = Kaori
*A = Yuuichi
声 = Voice

状況説明 = jyoukyou-setsumei = (circumstances, situation)-(explanation, exposition) = go figure that out yourselves ^^;
秘密機関 = himitsukikan = lit. secret organization (where Itsuki belongs and also, he got transferred in order to observe Haruhi.)
転校生 = tenkousei = transfer student = Itsuki

These lines is thought to be a reference to Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuuutsu but truth be told... it is not a reference to SHnY... these lines actually exist in the Kanon game, Day 08 to be exact. You'll stumble upon these if you decline Nayuki's offer to tour you around the school. I must say... it's a complete coincidence! ^^;

Now, for my own opinion...

I must say... 4 thumbs up! Feet included! KyoAni really did it this time! It thought that the reunion of Yuuichi and Nayuki was a little rushed but when I watch it again, it felt a little normal. The win part here is the unexpected fan service of Nayuki! Kidding! Anyway, the feel of the show definitely differs from the first Kanon series, and using the original BGM really kicks it high to the Air. And if that's not enough, they've added some flavors to it too, like the dog and the cat in the Taiyaki stall and I get to see an unsuspected victim of Akiko's jam... spoiler[Poor Makoto...], how Yuuichi makes fun of Ayu's weakness against scary thing, etc. etc. Actually, I was hoping for a true to game adaptation of Kanon but I didn't expected they'd make it even BETTER than I expected! Using the original BGM was already a win for me, then they added up some spices so it would be a win for everyone. If this continues, Kanon 2002 will be kick out and replaced by Kanon 2006 and it will charge towards #2 spot in my favorite anime (2 KEY Titles will be reighning from the top list and that would probably go 3 if CLANNAD appears since I really really like CLANNAD). Anyway, Nice work of art KyoAni!

Episode 8....this is it people! It's Makoto's story in FULL FORCE! Twisted Evil

Here are the main points that happened:

spoiler[Mishio Amano gets introduced (voiced by the awesomeness of Maaya Sakamoto), and she told Yuuichi not to get too close towards Makoto as it'll only lead to despair.

She also mentioned that Makoto is not human. According to her, a miracle happened which allowed Makoto to take human shape just to meet him. In order for this to happen, she had to sacrifice her memory and her life.

Which means, later on Makoto will.......

Also note the fact how more clumsy Makoto has become.

And not to mention, Yuuichi is starting to remember where Makoto's name really came from. And he was chatting with a fox when he was a kid.]

Hehehe, they're not going to hold back. That I can tell you much. Cool
*stocks up on tissues for episode 9* Haven't gotten around to posting on this thread the last few weeks, but of course the Kanon watching is still rolling ahead...I forgot just how much humor is in this series, mainly from that Yuuichi and how he makes fun of these girls. That shoujo manga-reading was priceless. And of course, Makoto's story continues headlong towards its conclusion, and there were some nice little hints along the way, such as spoiler[Yuuichi saying, "You don't do anything except eat, sleep, and lay around the house, you're like an animal."] If you rewatch this series (or have prior knowledge from Kanon '02 or the game), you'll see a lot of "aha!" moments. In this version, we're certainly seeing a better -developed story, with Makoto becoming less hellbent on revenge and more normalized over time.

So, I'm wondering whose story they'll tackle next, out of Shiori, Mai, and Ayu. I'm guessing Mai, since Yuuichi's been talking to her quite a bit and trying to figure out what's going on with the demons and everything. That should be a visual treat for us.

I insisted to my friend who is following this series (but hasn't been exposed to Kanon otherwise) that spoiler[every "Auu!" is an Aha! moment]. He has a hard time seeing how, but it won't be long...

Yeah, it'll probably be Mai. IIRC, spoiler[ Shiori's story occured quite late, and Ayu's story was dead last. Although, their story progressed slowly but gradually during others' arcs. And we haven't seen the actual ghost in Mai's arc yet, and I'm guessing we should see it soon.]

After watching episode 8 & seeing how certain scenes from earlier eps foreshadowed the things that I learned, I'm officially hooked, as well as my rating for it being upped to an Excellent from a Very Good.

& is it just me, or does anybody else miss the scheming, vengeful Makoto? Razz

Haven't watched Episode 8, but I've been hearing everwhere about how amazing it is. It also polled very high over at Asuki with an overwhelming 10/10, so hopefully I can get around to watching it soon.

I hope Episode 8's greatness is due to KyoAni's greatness and not all because of the plot twist (I already know what happens, unfortunately...).

Episode 9......spoiler[Emotions are seriously running high here. Makoto's condition is seriously worsening as she began to regress backwards to an almost child-like state. Amano pretty much briefed Yuuichi about the fox legend that resides on the hill. Yuuichi figured out that Makoto is that fox and also the same fox he took care of in the past.
]

Dammit! I don't know if I'll be able to handle the next episode! That BGM in the next episode preview didn't make it better. spoiler[And the fact Makoto wants Yuuichi to marry her....oh shit, man!]

About that legend, spoiler[is that a real Japanese legend, or one just made up in the world of Kanon? As I recall from another anime, Inukami, Youko is the name of over-powered fox girl. Though I guess it could be a coincidence.] Anyway spoiler[I had to break out the tissue box for this episode. Had to wipe away some streams of sadness. ]

I'm not sure what to say about episode 9...We're finally starting to get to the meat of the series, and I knew it wasn't going to be all fun and games, but it's still so sad.

It was pretty sad, spoiler[the whole regression thing...but ater Saikano and what happens with Chise it's just not as powerful with Makoto.]

What I'm more interested in is the others...now that we know that magical wierdness can and does happen I am re-assessin my thoughts.

Mai: spoiler[Initially I thought she was delusional or something (cue troubled past/tragedy etc) and that the ghosts weren't real...but now I'm not so sure. I don't see her as a real competition for being Yuuichi's girl at the end(if that's where this goes)]

Natsuki: spoiler[Still not really sure...I think she's likely to be the girl he finally ends up with but more as a kind of cliche 'Ah! I realis now I loved you all along' thing...]

Ayu: spoiler[Dead girl reincarnated...perhaps related to Mai if this is so(ghosts and all). She doesn't seem to know about modern things (cell phones etc) and doesn't seem to have a real home or do anything but look for whaeve she lost. Perhaps she knew Yuuichi from before and died and has come back because she really loved him. I see this ending like Makoto, with her dying or dissapearing or something.]

Of course this is all just speculation and I've no idea whats with Shiori...what do you think?

Earlier in this thread, I more than hinted that I was slightly disappointed with Kanon (2006) as compared to its predecessor. Having seen more episodes, I am a great deal more positive now. My original complaint (that the new anime presumes too much familiarity with the story on the part of the viewers, at least to begin with), still stands. But I have been won over by the new version's elegant and soulful storytelling style.

The new series is, in many ways, more richly detailed than the original. In particular, one character that has received much more attention this time round is Minase Akiko, played (as before) by Minaguchi Yuko. Where Akiko's rôle was somewhat understated in the original anime, the new series has brought her to the forefront -- and a well-deserved place it is, for she is a wonderful character. At once ditzy and deep, she is in many ways a breaker of clichés. Minaguchi Yuko is no stranger to maternal rôles, but in this character, she has found a fine line between the traditionally passive maternal dynamic, and the more active dynamic of a younger female character. I think it works very well, and it's clear that the character develops well as a result of her skilled interpretation.

You certainly feel the different pacing of Kanon 06 in episode 9...I was expecting spoiler[Makoto to actually "go away"], but instead we got a much more dragged-out and painful version of the events that show up in episode 10 or so of Kanon '02. Episode 10 of this series promises to be good as well.

Abunai also raises a good point--Akiko was pretty much a non-factor in '02 spoiler[until she gets injured towards the end and causes Nayuki to see "the sign" at the hospital], but it's nice to see her playing a more active role with so much caring and comedic value.

Hate to say it, but your worries are not unfounded; it's not the most depressing series evar, but there's still quite a lot to go through before the curtain closes on episode 24. From my perspective though, there's a bit of evil fun in reading new viewers' speculations and seeing how close to the mark they come.

I don't know if it's just me who thinks this strongly about it, but watching characters go through what spoiler[Makoto is going through, with her regression into a more mentally underdeveloped state to be absolutely heartbreaking. I've seen my share of sad moments, and I've certainly shed more than my masculine share of tears, but this is different. I feel as if part of me dies inside watching these characters lose their humanity, their self sufficience, their memory, and bodily functions; it's heartbreaking to me in a different and more fundamental way than most other things are. I haven't cried yet, I just feel hollow inside and ache as I watch Makoto live out the final moments of her life with the one she loves while she is unable to read or even feed herself; all the while regressing farther and farther into a childish state. ] I went through this same problem in Utawarerumono with spoiler[Kuuya] a few months ago, and I still haven't gotten over it, despite the incredibly short screen time that was devoted to it.

I haven't seen Episodes 8 or 9 of Kanon 2006, but from what I remember from watching Kanon 2002, Makoto's arc had the least impact on me. Not to say that it wasn't tragic or sad, but the others are even worse.

... jesus christ Shocked I'm going to try and ignore thinking about your comment too much, but the only story/circumstance that bothered me on a similar (different) level was hearing about the twins from BL: TSR (er.... BL: TSB Rolling Eyes ). I honestly am drawing a blank on what could be more sad, maybe I just have different priorities than most people, or maybe this is why I watch anime instead of writing it. Neutral
