I think there's one thing Otaku can all agree on: filler sucks! Sometimes, it just makes the series drag on (Toei animation), others, the character development is butt-fucked for the sake of humor (Studio Pierrot), and others completely screw with canon (both). Sometimes, filler can be so bad that it can get a series cancelled (Ruroni Kenshin).

However, there are some exceptions to this. I will explain my exceptions. Warning, some of these contain spoilers.

Fullmetal Alchemist- In the first anime, everything after the fight with Greed became filler. While the manga is superior in my opinion, the first FMA anime is still well regarded. It's like comparing Star Trek and The Next Generation. In some ways, the latter is superior, but will never be as well-regarded as the original. There's a reason people argue which FMA is better.

Dragon Ball Z- The only time I felt the filler was necessary was Gohan's training with Piccolo. The 6 months he spent alone helped develop Gohan as a badass, and the anime got to show more of that. In fact, all the training period fillers help build-up the following battles. On a related note, the Driving School filler was pretty hilarious.

Fist of the North Star- While it only took ten chapters for Kenshiro to face Shin (which equals 4-6 episodes), the anime made it a 20+ episode arc. It helped build-up Ken's battle with his nemesis. Some filler moments also showed Shin's more human side. In the manga, we're just supposed to accept that he felt remorse for his actions, but the anime showed him sparring a servant that betrayed him, hinting that he wasn't as evil as he appeared.

Naruto- While most of the filler was complete crap, there were a few exceptions. The Kakashi's Mask filler was hillarious (but shouldn't count since it was adapted from an Omake). The first filler in the 80 episode hell had Sakura's decision to become a medical ninja. The Bikochu had some character development for Hinata. Hinata's spoiler[confession episode] was stretched out so she'd look less pathetic against Pain, but also added some backstory on her crush on Naruto (as well as a glimpse of her mother). They even had a filler for Tenten's backstory, which says something.

So, what are your favorite fillers?

You know, it's not 'filler' if it's actually important to the plot. Saying the last half of the first FMA series is filler is completely wrong.

Filler is those episodes which have no baring on the plot and are just there to fill time, like Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive when they should be preparing to fight the main villain of the arc.

Which is, yes, amusing.

I also loved the Kakashi's mask episode from Naruto. I saw that on TV before I got into anime, and it had me laughing so hard. Other filler I really liked.... hm.......

The special exam that was added to the hunter exam in Hunter X Hunter. It blew my mind when I found out that was filler. It let you get more attached to all of the contestants in a fun environment and forced them all to work together as one team to survive. Which led perfectly into the next canon exam, which was tospoiler[ hunt each other for a week]. It really made the exam so much more fierce and gave the viewer a reason to actually feel bad when those characters spoiler[die or don't pass the exam].

And yea I'll definitely second the Gohan survival training filler from DBZ, especially the episode "Gohan Makes a Friend." I remember watching that when I was little and actually crying at the end of it when his dinosaur friend spoiler[got killed and eaten.] And then I got goosebumps afterwards when Gohan's tears blew away and he smiled. Heck, those episodes made Gohan my favorite DBZ character.

The episode of DBZ where Krillin & co are training with Kami and they go into that weird illusion room (was it the time chamber? I don't remember) and fight those two Saiyans and get absolutely massacred. That episode was awesome. Really, I don't know if I'd even call that filler. It doesn't advance the plot but it totally builds up the arrival of the Saiyans. Too bad it got cut from Kai.

Well, "Anime moments that never happened in the manga" was too long of a title.

Give five quick examples of anime filler that I found to actually be decent:

-Rurouni Kenshin- The Christian arc. It does have its rough areas such as some ridiculous choices in plotting (examples include spoiler[Shougo's sword technique which supposedly blinds foes permanently yet Kenshin is able to get his vision back after defeating him in battle] and a moment where spoiler[Kenshin and pals were conveniently on a trapdoor that a baddie had them fall into]), but it still retains the show's historical focus on exploring elements within the uncertainty of Meiji-era Japan's early years with this arc exploring the oppression of Christianity under the Tokugawa shogunate.

-Kare Kano- Episode 25 where spoiler[Kano gets confronted by a female romantic admirer.] Really silly stuff with a funny resolution when all is revealed over the incident, even if it was one of the major contributors of leaving the culture festival arc with Yukino, Arima and pals hanging after the final episode.

-Kodocha- The series is quite notable for having a fair number of comedy filler episodes that are used as breaks from the more serious developments in Kodocha's plot with Sana, Hayama and their other pals. The filler, while still funny, does usually get a bit on the bizarre side such as spoiler[the Haya-moth episode] and an episode following the New York arc with Sana and Naozumi involving the pairing spoiler[opposing a town prohibition on music and singing.]

-Fullmetal Alchemist (first series)- Ignoring the fact that the first series pretty much creates its own plot developments in later episodes, there was one comedic filler episode in the middle of the series split in two segments with spoiler[Lt. Havoc's struggles to find a girlfriend and Mustang's subordinates investigating a "haunted" Warehouse 13]. It was quite funny and the placement of the episode was perfect for a breather as FMA was starting to get more darker and serious with its plot developments by that point.

-Denno Coil- A comedy filler episode in the middle of the series where spoiler[Yasako and the other investigation agency members get microscopic societies of Illegals living on their faces in the form of beards.] Quite the random and silly episode.

My problem with Dragon Ball Z Kai is that they cut out all the filler and there's much more than just the driving episode which I count as Dragonball Z. For example, I always loved Yamcha's stint as a baseball player as it was the only fight he won.

Haruhi Suzumiya. Someday in the Rain. And I know I'm the only one who likes the episode as the first season finale , and maybe even the episode. Why? Because it does two things: First, it makes you want to watch more of these endearing oddballs and two, it's a simple "day in the life" episode in a series where playing a computer game can mean life or death and a baseball game can save the universe.

Add me to the list of people who thought Someday in the Rain made a good finale.

It doesn't change the fact that the first FMA was a new production that wasn't intended to follow the manga; it's exactly like calling adaptations of American comics 90% filler.

True. But considering the episode didn't contribute any advancement to the show's plot or any major character development, it would still technically qualify as filler.

Episode six of Kurenai has no manga equivalent, but it's certainly one of the most memorable episodes in the show.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with fond memories of the driving school ep from DBZ. It's a really simple premise (Goku and Piccolo learn to drive, hilarity ensues) but it's fun, and it doesn't bog down the main story.

I say that the Excalibur episodes from Soul Eater are some of the funniest/most random filler I've seen. They have nothing to do with the plot, nor add anything to the story. I do believe there's three of them, and all three consist of Excalibur (the sword King Arthur used...why am I explaining this? I'm surrounded by nerds. Moving on...) stringing random sentences together to form some sort of half baked tale of his life. The funny thing is that Excalibur has written an autobiography. In it, he declares how he is the most powerful weapon, the one who can wield him will have ultimate victory etc. Now that is all true, however, the meister who uses him, must put up with Excalibur's eccentric personality (and three hundred provisions. Or is it 3000? I forget.). My favorite Excalibur episode is where he introduces the song about himself. Troy Baker voices said character, and that makes it all the more entertaining.
