One of the biggest polish manga publishing houses is doing a survey where fans can give reccomendation for a new line of one shot mangas (being 1 volume only). The winner so far seems to be Alive. Personally I recommended Jisatsu Circle. Can you recommend some good 1 volume mangas?

Blood the Last Vampire 2002 is a really good one. It's a pretty gritty and violent piece of art so it's for more mature audience. Also its not really one-shot manga as it's a loose sequal to the Blood the Last Vampire movie. But considering the pretty flimsy plot Blood had, I don't see why it wouldn't work as stand alone piece.
A.D. Police manga is set in the Bubblegum Crisis universe but is in all essence a stand alone piece. I actually read this one even before I'd heard of the Bubblegum Crisis. This too is a pretty mature title. The theme is cyberpunk. The manga involves some characters that appear in the Bubblegum Crisis like Leon and Mason, but the main plot revolves around a mad boomer who thinks his the Messiah for the boomers. Of cource there's always Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface. GITS 2 is really a pretty loose sequal to the first one. The issue here is that manga is usually serialized in monthly magazine before being made into TPBs. So a store that originally spans two volumes, might pretty easily be published as a one volume elsewhere. |

Kaine is good. I don't think anybody has the publication rights in the states though.

Alive is pretty good, but definitally not Tsutomu Takahashi's best work. As for one volume works that I would recommend:
Domu: A Clild's Dream-From Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira). Despite being only one volume long, this is one of the deepest and most horrifying things I've ever read. The story deals with children and the evil that can come from innocence, as well as ideas like urban isolation and human cruelty. The story and writing are some of the best out there, and the art is full of detail and looks great. Ohikkoshi-A romantic comedy by Hiroaki Samura. It's a pretty crazy little story, about young people in love, and is very funny. Samura can really create some of the best characters I've seen in manga, and the ones in Ohikkoshi are no exception. They really come to life and seem like real people when your reading. The story has a pretty serious side to it as well, and ends like this. In addition, there is a short story in the Japanese edition of the TPB called "Homeless Shoujo Mangaka - Luncheon Diary of Tears" that is also superb, and quite depressing. Both are great reads with incredible artwork. While they're probobly a bit too wacked out for alot of people, Junko Mizuno's one volume works (Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Princess Mermaid) are all great if your into weird reads. I've heard her art described as "Powerpuff girls in bondage gear on acid", and that's pretty accurate. In the titles I mentioned above, she takes a well known fairy tale and twists it into something wild, disturbing and full of black humor. Great, great art, and very well written. She isn't really a mainstream artist in Japan from what I hear, and her stuff isn't for everyone, but if you'r open minded and like odd stories her stories are great reads. |

Most people will dis-agree with me but try Cowboy Bebop:Shooting Star. It's two volumes long, and adds a bit of a twist on the bebop characters, and the art is pretty good.
Also the original Cowboy Bebop manga is pretty good, and is three volumes long. It contains the art that you're used to, and the same old characters. |

No, Arkard was clear that he means one volume works only:
Actually, most of the time "one-shot" refers to someting with only one chapter. |

I hope I didn't confuse anyone. Thanks for all your help so far but, yes, I did mean only 1 volume works. I said so clearly in my first post. But please, feel free to write more suggestions. Remember - they can actually be printed in Poland if they get enough votes.

Viz released a few Rumiko Takahashi works in stand alone volumes and called them "Rumic Theater. They were just collected stories of some of her one-chapter works. One of them was entitled "One or Double" and contained some pretty nice stories of Rumiko's work. Here's the link to it at Amazon.

I really appreciate when companys do something like this (I believe Tokyopop did it with Fruits Basket). Odd that Alive is the leader though. Is it safe to assume that the market in Poland is geared towards older males? I think it's like this in France and Germany too, but I'm not totally sure. Anyway, Taiyo Matsumoto has some one volume collections of short stories. Haven't read any yet ("Blue Spring" will be released in the US pretty soon though), but I assume that they will be great from his track record. Another collection is called 100 I think. |

You might consider Short Program. It's also filled with short stories from a very renowned manga-ka. I really enjoyed it but some people might consider it an old drawing style.
I think ShortCuts is a one shot too but I'm not quite sure. It's filled with a whole lotta shorts, many that are just a page or two long. I really liked volume 1 of Kill Me, Kiss Me. The first volume stands alone from the rest of the volumes. The three main characters in the first volume barely appear in the rest of the story. So, if there was some way to get just the first volume and not the rest, it would be a good shoujo one-shot. |

Well, if you want to be technical neither Short Cuts of Short Program are one volume works (two volume of each series have been released in the US by Viz). You could read them as one shots though, as both are composed of short stories.

Kaori Yuki had a number of one shot titles, like Kaine which was already put up, and others like Blood Hound, Boys next door, and Cruel Fairy Tales. Cruel Fairy Tales is my fave by her.
The only other one shot I can think of that I liked would be a series called "Goth". It said volume 1 on it though, so I'm not to sure if it's continuing or not. Haven't seen a vol 2 yet. |
