Will Legend of the Galactic Heroes ever make it the USA? I really hope it will someday, but it seems as if it never will, its form the 1980s-90s and its long, but maybe someday they will release it.

The short answer is no. The long answer is noooooooooo.
There was talk of bringing it over early in this decade, but at a very high price (for the US) that would have required a certain number of pre-orders for it to happen. That obviously fizzled. |

Man, i'd love to watch this dubbed. it's so dialogue heavy, i'd like to be able to sit back an absorb the story without having to look down all the time.
That'll never happen though. if this show ever makes it to the US, they'll spend the least amount of money possible. which is why the closest thing i can imagine is some kind of digital only release in the future. i mean, as amazingly fantastic as this show is, it's too niche and too long. it's one thing to release one dvd of something this unique, but 20 discs? that being said, this show is AMAZING, and everyone who gives it a chance seems to agree. there is a market out there for it and digital releases are a cheap way to get this type of show out there. |

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is in the same boat as shows like Monster, in that it's a very adult series built on lengthy, no-frills character development done through dialogue, slow plot progression, and a minimum of action, sex, cuteness, and generally any of the other "ADD nets" that are typically used to capture the attention of your average anime fan. That style just does not sell in the American anime market, save to very, very niche crowds. Shorter series in this style, like a Marimite or a Nodame Cantabile, tend to get licensed because they're short--a smaller distributor like Nozomi that specializes in these sort of niche shows can pick it up relatively inexpensively and not lose too much money on the venture--but shows of this type getting into the 70s and 100s of episodes like Monster and LotGH just plain don't have a chance.
Which is tragic, because they tend to be some of the best shows out there. |

Actually, I remember hearing something about the creator(s) wanting like a huge fee (like $20 per episode, I think) to bring it over and to be honest the show is old and many of its episodes look it. Unless it is updated/remastered for HD in Japan, on a Blu-Ray collection I doubt we will ever hear even a peep of LoGH getting brought over here. |

I believe a remastered set already exists, so a lack of updated materials wouldn't be an issue.
Back in 2003, ANN had the creators wanting some 1500 people willing to pay a minimum of $1700 for the whole series. Apparently they only received "hundreds" of replies and presumably that wasn't nearly enough to justify production. I never head of that myself until it was already far too late. Perhaps such an attempt might well be slightly more successful these days, considering all the buzz and hype the series has received online over the past few years, but who knows if the creators will settle for anything less than their original goal after all this time. Or perhaps something different, like legal digital distribution, might eventually be a good alternative for selling LOGH in the current market? I'd sure hope so, but we will never know until it happens. |

I understand what you feel.
Although LOGH have a bunch of mature fans, they will never be popular enough to be released in classical way. Long, "speaking" series with "strange" graphic, no fanservice and effective fighting scenes? Fail! It seems that there are many people who like it, because those who have fallen in love with it are so impressed that won't forget it. |

Monster is actually getting a release later this year, so it's never too late. |

Monster have been aired long after last episodes of LOGH was released.
Truly, I don't see that this two series have anything in common besides "adult plot". |

An extreme length for their genres and demographics, character-driven and dialogue-heavy writing, a general lack of the sort of sex and violence that typically hold most anime-watching audiences? Truly, for the sake of this discussion I don't see what the two series don't have in common besides the difference in age and basic genre.
Wow...I have been out of the loop a long time. And FUNimation got it. Awesome! |
