A couple of the more recent covers have been made slightly less risque, but otherwise no, the manga is unedited in all of its soft-core tentacle rape and robogasm glory.

As of volume 24 (the most recent one released in the U.S.), there have only been two visual edits. In volume 17 (?), the cover art was slightly retouched - one of the girls (14-15 years old) was originally wearing a costume that was almost topless (it obscured nipples and areolas, and little else). The reworked cover made it more of a skintight bodysuit affair (but still very close to the original) - and Del Rey included a special color page (just inside the cover) showing the original art.

The cover of volume 23 originally had a panty shot of a "10" year old (spoiler[she's actually a 1,000 year old vampire]) prominently displayed. In the reworked cover, her dress just covers it. However, for this volume, Del Rey did not include the original art (or, for that matter, the totally nude art used in the Japanese limited edition release).

Other than those two changes, the art in the Del Rey release is as close to the Japanese as physically possible. So visual censorship isn't an issue.

The real concern is probably the translation. Del Rey's gone through . . .6 (?) different translation teams for Negima, and there have been . . . glitches. The first translator cut some foreshadowing dialogue (for some reason), while the second screwed up translating some names and titles (so "Thousand Master" became "Southern Master" - even when it didn't make sense in context). The third decided to leave spells, nicknames, and katas in their original languages (a choice all of the later translators have decided to keep). And the translator who worked on volume 18 & 19 mangled a couple of spell names, and chose to turn the "Koku Shundo" martial arts technique into "Space Fissure Movement" (a teleportation spell). Del Rey's been very good at correcting the outright mistakes in reprints, but there are still quite a few totally uncorrected copies floating around out there

Overall, the translation has been very superb - and this is a title that really needed a high quality translation. Negima is the kind of series where there will be a main conversation in the foreground, two secondary conversations in the background, and a tertiary one that references the other three - and they'll all be important. And I haven't run across a single panel in Negima where the translation desn't work. But there are still those glitches

You don't have to worry much about this one, though, as that only lasted for the first two volumes, and unless you're intentionally looking for the error copies, you're not likely to find them. They'd already reprinted them with the correct translations by the time I bought mine, which was only maybe 6 months after their initial release. Unfortunately, a lot of the jokes from the first two volumes haven't been corrected to a more accurate translation, but most of the intent is still there.

Not to nitpick but the retouched cover with the inside reprint is volume 16. But you know I never noticed the difference before now.

Tentacle rape? I must have missed that - the closest I remember is the textile spoiler[eating monster (which tends to lick his victims - after eating their clothes - to get the last threads) ] and the botched water prison spell (spoiler[which nearly tickled Asuna to death]). Do you remember which volume that happened in?

On a side note, I'd like to point out that Negima isn't a sex farce. It very easily could be, but it doesn't (or at least hasn't) go there - since 99% of the main characters are between 10-15 years old, it has a very . . . junior high take on sex. A lot of accidental/involuntary nudity, kissing games, and the like - but no actual sex. And while a number of the girls have clearly found their parents' "secret stash" (or bypassed the anti-porn filters on the school computers), none of them have gone beyond talking, and a French kiss is still very risque.

Ah . . . you're correct - it is volume 16. I also missed that - in the retouched cover - they reworked the bottom half of the costume slightly (by removing the laces)

The water prison is in volume 6 and the textile monster is in vol 21.

I was referring to the former, actually. It wasn't "rape" (hence my use of "soft-core"), but it was so much like one that it's easier to call it that than write out the actual explanation of what happened.

You're friend is a lying liar who lies. Wink

As has been pointed out several times, Del Rey's release of the manga is thankfully uncensored. The only times they've done anything were to make a couple of covers a tad less naughty. (Which they shouldn't have done but whatever.)

That friend is probably just trying to make you think the official release is bad so you'll go to his preferred scanlation site.
