From Mania's AOD forums:
Quote:
Well, someone asked Jason Thompson via Twitter about Kurohime, since he worked on it, and here's what he had to say about it, in three parts:

Yep, Kurohime has been canceled. Sorry. Sad
-I don't really know, but low sales probably have something to do with it. They've had to get a lot harsher about profits.
-I don't know, you'd have to ask Viz. But it would be hard for another publisher to get because it's a Jump manga.

I'm really disapointed to hear this because I just started buying this series. I guess once I reach vol.14 (the last published volume) I'll have to search for scanlations, although I would really prefer not to.

I'm going to guess it had something to do with it being an obscure manga and not giving it a real preview in Shonen Jump. At least with Reborn it already was pretty popular among anime fans.

Uh oh. I guess we should have seen this coming when Viz decided to cut down on their employees a few months ago. It was wishful thinking to assume that they wouldn't drop manga as well. They could have at least sent out a press release or something, but then again Viz has been the worst when it comes to communicating with its fans.

I imagione they avoid send out PR of that sort in case sales pick up, and they can continue it. They haven't cancelled many series in their lifespan, and have completed a ton, so I guess it's mostly a matter of making sure you collect the manga you like, to ensure they'll continue publishing it.

I'm actually surprised it was doing badly, considering it's so fanservice-y. But then those aren't always guaranteed hits here. [See I"s.] Unfortunately, I'm not gonna miss Kurohime, as it JTS a long time ago, and the manga-ka telling me he'd rather work on another series seems to support that argument. I just wanna make it through Eyeshield and Ultimate Muscle, though. But I'm guessing those are still in print because they've gone so far that they can't stop now when they're this close to the end. That, and they actually do well enough that they don't lose money in spite of not being the bigger hits from the company. I feel sorry for Bastard fans, though, 'cus Hagiwara sounds like he's on even longer hiatuses than Togashi; so even if Viz did continue it, you still wouldn't be any closer to the end yet. Anyway, if you want to look at the bright side, they did miraculously finish St. Seiya.

That's kind of shocking. Viz has been publishing Eyeshield 21, Ultimate Muscle, and Prince of Tennis just fine, and those series have 29-42 volumes. They aren't the most popular Jump series out there, either.

Those other titles probably have more readers who consistenly buy 'em. Kurohime and Bastard probably did alright in the beginning, but saw a drop-off in sales down the road. I think if you ask nicely, you might be able to convince Viz to at least continue Bastard at $12.99+/volume at SDCC, but Kurohime is probably not worth it. The series suffers from trying to balance depth with fan-service. It works in Japan, because they see the medium differently than we do, and have room for both elements. But over here, you got fans who prefer consistency.

Speaking of Reborn, the next volumes of Reborn (17 and 18) are no longer listed on Amazon or Simon and Schuster, and they were there until at least a few weeks ago. Also, Viz posted their October releases, and 17 wasn't on there. This either means it's been canceled, though it seems unlikely. It's release rate would probably be made slower before being outright canceled. Or it means it could be moving to the magazine, which would make sense since it's at the beginning of a new arc. I dunno. But I have all the volumes so far, and I'd hate for it to be canceled.

All I can say is, I really feel bad for the folks who really liked Kurohime. I know how it is when a series you like is incomplete in the U.S....

They had better NOT cancel Reborn! If they do, I will be so upset.

If they do, they do. There is nothing you can do if they decide to cancel a series though, besides buying and supporting Viz Media with the series.

Though I heard from a friend the series spoiler[ends up to becoming very bland later on. It's basically pretty bishonen guy versus evil bisshonen guy.]

As for Kurohime, that is pretty bad news for fans of that series, but this isn't the first time this has happened. Anyone ever hear of a series named Hamtaro? Well Viz Media canceled the series, despite the fact there was well over 100+ episodes left and never gave the series finale it needed.

Well, going by what is said in that thread (including comments by Ed Chavez from Vertical), it seems that Kurohime's cancellation is due to Viz reaching the end of Kurohime's print chapters. When Monthly Jump was canceled, Kurohime became an online series, so Viz would have to make a completely new contract (meaning the original license doesn't include the new stuff) for the online chapters. Ed also mentions that with Viz, their contracts usually include releasing a series to completion, so Reborn is probably safe. They finished Firefighter Daigo, and that had obscenely low sales, so if they finished that, they'll finish just about anything.

I definitely know the cancellation feeling as well. Fortunately, Viz doesn't look to be loosing the Kurohime liscense, so there's always the chance they might pick it back up again.
