I know I saw this thread a while back, but I can't find it ANYWHERE and it's not in the discussions index so without further ado...

LoveCom's one year anniversary is coming up in April. I recently watched this show in two days and absolutely loved it. It was quite quite funny ("What are you? The spokesperson for Bear Curry?") and also incredibly sweet.

I was forced to watch this by another household member who kept telling me how cute and funny it is, but I was wary of the premise. A tall girl and a short guy is the whole premise of the show? Fortunately, the fact that Risa and Atsushi turned the awkwardness of their situation into a joke was exactly what made the show so great. LovelyComplex far surpassed holding its own in terms of humor and sweetness. Risa and Atsushi are perfect.

My one complaint would have to be the amount of crying Risa did. But really that's it. I especially liked the character designs-- something about the way Risa was drawn just really appealed to me visually.

I'm not usually huge into romantic shows, but this one just totally captured me and will definitely be added to my list of all-time favorites.

Strange how the strong kansai-ben was the biggest turn on for me.

My biggest complaint about Lovely Complex is that it takes quite a lot of episodes for them to get together. Everyone knows that they will eventually become a couple. Get done with the obvious on the first episodes like Kare Kano and Bokura ga Ita and move on. I find it really tiresome when the protagonist takes millennia to either confess his love or find out "whom he truly loves". Anyone who has ever been into a serious relationship knows that the real challenge lies after it has begun.

Directly related to my previous complaint is how dense Ootani is. Men are probably slow by nature when it comes to relationships, but this guy sets a new record. I bet not even Superman could see through him.

Another thing that bothered me was the use of so many clichés to "stir things up" between the pair. I know the characters are young, but some introspection like in Nana would have been a much better choice. My favorite scene in the whole show (which I don't believe to be spoilerish) happens when they decide to cross-dress and Risa has to chase Atsushi. The narration of her optimistic feelings felt terribly sincere. More scenes like this would have been great.

You can clearly state who is the target audience of this show just by listening to the openings and endings alone.

I was actually charmed by the fact that Risa spoiler[confesses her love pretty early on (episode 5 or 6) and gets rejected.] It's not like there are many shows about the mature challenges in a relationship (and don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have a problem with that)-- I just think many shows are about leading up to/getting involved in a relationship. I thought LC did a good job of showing the before and after in a real-life imperfect couple. spoiler[Original to me was Risa getting rejected twice yet still trying in an honest, not-creepy way.]

As for Otani being dense, I have to agree he is, but it was believable at least for me. I once had a guy friend tell me that girls often consider , however briefly, the option of a dating a friend who is a guy, or at least entertain the thought. However guys don't always do that, and sometimes it has to be pointed out to them that, "hey, is that your friend? she's pretty cute." spoiler[To Otani, the thought of dating Risa was so outrageous his mind couldn't accept it. and as for being slow to realize his feelings for Risa, well, I suppose he was a little slower than normal but hey, everyone works their feelings out at their own pace. ]

I love this show for, what I imagine is, the opposite reason most would like it.

spoiler[
Never have a seen such a perfect depiction of a terrible TERRIBLE relationship. The lead male is possessive dismissive abusive and down right cruel in relation to Risa. This is the kind of thing that if you saw happening to your friend you would instantly punch the short kid in the face the whole attitude of "I don't like you and I am not attracted to you but I want you to stay obsessed with me and not go out with anyone else" is so terrible and the fact that their friends encourage this behavior is hilarious. But this kind of stuff happens in real life, which kind of makes it refreshing. I started watching because I wanted to hear the dialect but I never expected such a hilarious depiction of manipulation and cruelty! When Risa was first rejected I thought "oh what are they going to do, they can only drag out this guy teasing her for like 3 episodes right?" WRONG they can do it for as many as they damn well please! With a little change in the writing the male lead could have passed for a sociopath who wanted to force some poor girl into obsessing over him and devoting herself to him just for his amusement, once I realized this and began examining the show as a realistically harsh depiction of relationships I stopped being frustrated and started being fascinated. I doubt the creators intended for someone to look at their show in this way but I friggen love it]

Though I cannot stress enough how hilariously unhealthy their relationship was (being brought to tears every other day = no good)

I've only read the manga, but he never really came of as possessive to me. Besides that though, I actually agree with you (oh god); their relationship is pretty messed up.

:\ do we have a feud going on that I didn't know about?

There is a line in the anime when some dude is trying to pick her up where the lead male says "stay away from her I'm the one she likes". Which i considered possessive as well as funny, could just be considered just jealousy but when you are jealous and defensive over someone you are admittedly not attracted to I call it possessive

Feud? Shit no, I don't care nearly enough about you to feud with you. At the most, your worth mild snark and sarcasm, but only because you seem like you can handle it; unlike some.
