I'm purely guessing here, but does it mean that one is an old regular, and the other is a spammer?

I'm just curious how you become an "old regular".

mangod probably got the title "spammer" because:
1.) He spammed useless information on the forum
2.) He set the custom title to that.

Actually, I believe it applies to the encyclopedia.

People usually get the title "spammer" because they have abused the encyclopedia. And there are no cutom titles. Gatsu is an exception because... he's Gatsu. If you know him, you know what I mean.

Without giving out any names, here are some ways to receive the SPAMMER title:
1. Post fansub, scanlation, and/or commercial links.
2. Copy a sample entry and post it as an episode title, opening theme, etc.
3. Ask where to download a certain anime title.
4. Post your own email address as a cast/staff member's email address.
5. Use BabelFish to translate an anime/manga title into a different language and post the result as an alternative title.
6. Post Pokemon trivia on anime/manga titles that are not Pokemon.
7. Post random porno pictures on the Encyclopedia.
8. Post InuYasha pictures on anime/manga titles that are not InuYasha.
9. Post personal comments as plot summaries, trivia or other information.
10. Post theme song lyrics (this is Anime News Network, NOT AnimeLyrics), technical specs of Gundams, etc., as other information.

The "Old Regular" title was given to a few people back when we re-opened the forum in PHP. It was given to people who had been active on our prior forum.

Here's yet a few more ways to be branded SPAMMER:
11. Make up your own anime title and attempt to add it to the Encyclopedia.
12. Add Coldplay, Velvet Revolver or other bands as staff members to certain anime titles because they're your favorite bands.
13. Make up your own English cast list for titles that haven't been licensed yet.
