I am over series of anime.
I came to this realization when I finished watching/buying the entire Yu Yu hakusho series. Besides the fact that I spent around 300 bucks, I think its just so depressing that when you finally come into contact with a, I’m going to say it, Perfect anime series, why someone would cancel it. I mean, DB/DBZ/DBGT went on for a long time and most of the time the characters are just constipated. This series had actual fights and most of the time there was one fight damn near every episode. There was progressive plot advancement, decent art, and characters that were not only bad ass, but meshed well with each other. I would have to say that this is probably my favorite anime series, with kenshin coming in a close second.
So anyway, I have decided to start watching more movies and less series. Granted I recently purchased three box sets of anime, I think it is time to get something that I can watch and not get soo attached to the characters that I have to know what they are doing every second of the day. However, still good enough for me to enjoy. On top of that because it is a movie I expect CLEAN animation, a beginning, middle, and clear end. I hate it when directors dont have the balls to give you a difinitive ending to a story. You can't please everyone, but you should be brave enough to say, this is how I want my story to end. Look at american cinema, the directors give you an ending and you either accept it or you say, that could have been better and you complain. But at least you can complain, with some anime your like, well it doesn't say that they did/didn't get married/divorced...or he/she did/didn't die/live....
So back on topic, the question I pose is, does any one know of any good movies? (A place that carries them would also be nice) I basically enjoy all genres aside from the super bizarre. If it helps, Princess Mononoke is probably my favorite anime movie.
Also, if anyone wants to talk about Yu Yu, Kenshin, or any other high end anime series, let’s do it, maybe I can get some closure.

That's what you get for wasting your money on such a crappy series.
If you want good movies, watch any Studio Ghibli film or any of the three Satoshi Kon movies (Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue).

The Giant Robo OVA is the best anime you'll ever see. Only 7 episodes (between 40 and 60 minutes each), and spread across just three discs.
Get it, now. It's perfect.

Before throwing away money like that, you should try to do what I do. I download fansubs, plenty of fansubs. If I happent o find an amazing series, I go buy it.

I think you guys are focusing on the wrong part of the thread. Personally i think $300.00 was a small price to pay for the hours of entertainment that Yu Yu gave me. If they had continued the series I would have happily purchased the additional box sets. Infact, I wish they would revive the series. I am pretty sure that they won't. Thanks tho for everyone input, I hope i can get some more, btw, i have seen tokyo godfathers, millenium princess, (both were ok, but i didn't much care for the style of the art.) As for perfect blue, meh I like a little more action. Take Appleseed, the remake, good story plenty of action, great art.

that's why you stick with buying short series. 9 out of 10 times, any series over 52 is gonna end lame

Box sets, shorter series, rentals, used Dvd stores, where I live and some other areas, libaries (I checked out all of FLCL, Blue Gender, Witch Hunter Robin, GITS Stand Alone Complex) loaning DVD's between friends.
Most series over 26 episodes are weak.
Point is, there are options.
All the Best,
Nani?

I don't see much hope for anyone who puts down Satoshi Kon.
I suppose you can settle for some violent shounen brain candy like MD Geist or FF: Advent Children.

I don't think it's a lack of balls on the part of the creators that leads to these open endings...after all, an open ending benefits the creators by causing people to go out and buy more manga to finish the story. Or maybe it's just a cultural thing, that the Japanese are more accepting of non-definitive endings. I could be wrong on that.
In any case, I recommend short series; they may feel incomplete sometimes, but you usually get a pretty good story without excess filler. A 13-episode series like Haibane Renmei won't hurt the wallet too much, and if you don't like it, it's only 325 minutes of your time, instead of 2600 minutes (for 104 episodes).

I agree; short series are definitely better. Even if I did have the money for long series, I just can't stay interested in a series after 100 episodes, many times less. Anyway, short series tend to be better quality in my opinion. Some great movies are the Ghibli movies aforementioned, as well as short films such as
Kakurenbo - It's has a good plot, despite the ambiguous ending and "hide and seek" theme. It's got a creepier tone to it, but it's not scary.
Place Promised/ Voices of a Distant Star: I haven't gotten around to these yet, but these have racked up really good ratings. There's a thinpak out by ADV containing both short movies as well as the sountrack for under $30 at deepdiscountdvd.com.
By the way, what anime have you seen/ what anime do you like to watch? I could go on for a long time with this.

Please don't call mindless shounen jump crap like yu-yu "high end"
If you want actual "high end" quality check out Kino no Tabi, Haibane Renmei, Wolf's Rain, Elfen Lied, Rahxephon, Saikano, Koi Kaze, Noein, Mushishi, Monster, Now and Then Here and There, etc.
Also, I second the option of fansubs. Long action shows are much better as a weekly download>watch>delete.

Uh, you think Tokyo Godfathers is ok, and Yu Yu high end? Wow. I mean Yu Yu isn't terrible, but it sure isn't great. Again, stick to the good 12-28 episode series. There more fun anyway.

I agree with the buying shorter series things. Some 26 episode, or even 13 episode series can(and 9 times out of 10, do) have much better stories than anything that's past the 100 episode mark.
Fansubs is also a good option. Some people might find it unethical, but it's a darn good way to preview and get a feel for a show before you spend the money on the whole series. And you'll be exposed to a much larger variety of anime.

I think it's a mix of both those things.

I prefer shorter series over longer ones because, in the long run, I don't pay that much for them. Take Samurai Champloo for example. I think I paid.... *thinks* .... $170... jeesh o.O; but anyway, I really enjoyed that series and am glad that I purchased it. The good thing about anime companies nowadays is the thin packs. I can sure count on buying those from now on instead of getting a series by one DVD at a time.

I have to concur I would never consider Yu Yu high end. Personally I have bought a few Yu Yu dvds, and I like them. They are okay for what they do which in my oppinion is just over DBZ which drags out. Sadly I personally could never see buying the whole series.
You do have options just use a site like amazon or anyother site that provides comparable product typeing. You know where it says people who bought this also bought this. Many other posters have pointed out that Yu Yu falls into a very shallow catagory, and you will find other series to be quite similar. I would recommend Naruto, or even dragonball not Z or GT just regular dragonball.
I hate to say this but you seem to be going off the spoon fed scraps you get from cartoon network. That is good they do seem to pick decent series to feed the public. You need to open your mind to the possibilities out there. In that sense I have some recommendations for your movie collection.
Spirited away/Howls moveing castle. Sort of like alice in wonderland. They are just gorgeous films, and are just plain out and out well written. I think you will be hard pressed to find a person who dosent like them, and even harder pressed to find someone who hates them.
Ninja Scroll. This is a classic if you thought Yu Yu had interesting bad guys. You have not seen anything yet. The art is pure eye candy, and the action sequences are well designed. Beyond this there is a ninja scroll series. Which I think is overdue in comeing over here.
Ghost in the shell. What can be said its a icon, and a icon for a reason. It is getting a bit dated now, but once again there is a series out to back it up.
I personally think just trying out these films might expand your horizons. I know you might not beleive this. Not now probabally, but your only seeing the tip of the iceberg. There is a far richer world out there, just waiting for you to dig into. Like I said I own some Yu Yu. I just think you need to absorb more so you can take a jump up to a better series, and yes there are better.
I would recommend useing DVD empire myself. You can even find a link on this site. Make use of the reviews on this site, and go shopping for some old series that might be very well priced. I picked up Pilot candidate the series for 20 bucks. With lower priced goods and some idea what you want. You should be able to save some money, and or get more for your dollar. I am sure others would recommend online sites that save you some much needed money.
I am not sure about downloading off the internet. Maybe I am just that honest a person. Before anyone says it no I do not download MP3s. Heck there is alot of free samples to be had simply by filling out questionaire cards, and getting on mailing lists.
