It's obvious they must have received permission from Disney. Other than that, there's no way they would have been allowed to make video games (and a manga) including the actual characters. Isn't Disney creating an actual Kingdom Hearts cartoon?

Are they? Really? I'd like to see a press release on that. Though I really don't like the idea, it seems like they're focusing their creative talent on their Disney Channel TV shows instead of their films. But the whole "Disney has fallen because of Eisner" rant is for another day.

You say "Japan" but don't you mean a select company or two?
It's not impossible to license Disney characters, but it may not be cheap. |

disney cares about their "property" and how it is represented. they evaluate what the licence will be used for and what it means to the culture it is being made for.
i mean, if astroboy is a icon in Japan... why would it not be a good idea for mickey to star in a video game and some manga? i doubt mickey is in a Berserk or Battle Royale type storyline (haha) so who cares! i bet the disney stuff in american comics and video games goes through the same approval processes but probably more strict |

Way back in 2000 (when you were 8 year old) Sqaure and Disney announce a partnership:
Kingdom Heart release in 2002 for the PS2.

Actually there are three video games. You forgot Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Anyway. First of all, Disney is an international company, which means that the various characters are known and loved world-wide. As for Kingdom Hearts.... Square and Disney Interactive announced that they would be collaborating on a game sometime in 2000, as darkhunter mentioned. At E3 the following year, Square announced the name of this collaboration game and gave some basic details on the property. The game was released in Japan in 2001, and that was followed by a fall 2002 release in America. Co-developed properties like Kingdom Hearts are handled differently than if someone merely wants to gain the rights to use a particular character for a specific project. There is no licensing involved for the Disney characters in this case. I am not sure precisely who owns the actual rights to the original characters for the game, but I think it's Disney. The logo for the game itself bears the names of both Disney and Squaresoft. As for the announcement of an anime for this title, I'll direct your attention here. I haven't heard anything more since this news post, and it's from 2003. It seems that Disney put this plan on a back burner if they didn't just scrap it entirely. I need to get my hands on the first volume of the manga as it is available now. ~Shadrach Anki |

Reading left to right does not automatically equal bad. The Kingdom Hearts manga is unflipped. Left to right is the original direction. It was first released in a magazine that read left to right.
As for the manga itself, it is kind of short, maybe a little too fast, but for fans of the games, you'll probably be happy to have it. The artwork is very well done. Too bad that Shiro Amano's crazines didn't show as much as it did in the Legend of Mana manga. |

On the first page (or last) i think there is a note from the author saying that it is drawn in a "western style" because it's related to western material ( disney) |
