I've heard from some of my friends that there are counterfeit of US released anime DVDs. They said it looks exactly like official release but with a bit of shaddy packaging. Does anyone know if it's true or came across any DVDs like that?

Yes it's true, theres a whole bunch of them online as well as in privately owned anime merchindise stores. They're called bootlegs or pirated anime and are usually made in China. The ones you're specifically talking about are taken from the US releases of anime. They also make bootlegs of anime that have not been released in the US or that are taken from Japanese DVDs or television.
