I'm not saying it's a good idea or not, but I suddenly realized there isn't one. Electronic gaming has E3 and toys have Toy Fair, so why isn't there anything for anime? I understand that anime and manga are sometimes shown off at those same shows and at just about every major anime con in the world, but why nothing more specific? Just one big trade show that's closed to the public where industry buyers can get an idea of what the latest titles are and the media can get a first hand look at the new products and talk face to face with the distributers and reps without having to talk over pushy otaku.
It doesn't really seem like that bad of an idea, it's certainly been proven effective in other areas (though Toy Fair this year was a bit lacking). Done right it would give fans something to look forward to every year. However I can certainly see why the industry wouldn't want to mess with a good thing and just stick with things the way they are. Any thoughts? Emerje |

It would be an interesting trade show, but doesn't AX already hold an industry meeting (not open to the public)?

If anything, the closest you'd get would be cons. To be specific, the larger cons like AX or those really huge ComicCons. Other than that, uh, that's about it.

True, but they also have Game shows (several at that) and toy shows (Like the Tokyo Toy Show), but where's our anime trade show?
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. The thing is those same shows (AX and SDCC) also tend to show off related games and toys and still have their yearly trade events. Maybe it's just too soon and the industry is just too young for such a thing. Emerje |

Why in the world would you want a Japanese animation trade show in Japan?!? Geez, some people! 
I suppose though the real question is, do we really an actual trade show for anime in the US? I think cons pretty much take up any slack that would be needed. |

I just checked out AX's website and there is no listing in the events section for an industry meeting.
I do remember, however, in previous years listings there was an announcement for an industry meeting (invite only, I might add). That's why I figured that AX would count as the industry meeting. I always remembered industry meetings to be off limits to the general public, where anyone can get into a normal convention. |

AX is about the closest thing to a anime verison of E3 your going to get in the states.

Anime Expo is a trade show in every sense but the official one. Every industry member with money to spend shows off their wares in big, loud, expensive displays. And with so many important people in one place, you just know deals go down there every year.
(I know this is off-topic, but ADV's display at AX last year was really something else. I think they had their own little video theater, and that tall platform from which they threw goodies to the crowd.) ------RM |

The two floor display has apparently been replaced this year with something different, also two floors if I remember. The theatre was Bandai |

The only industry owned anime convention/festival in the USA is the Big Apple Anime Festival(BAAF). They are majority owned by Central Park Media. There' several minority owners as well in it.
The SPJA is the parent orgainization of Anime Expo(AX). It states on the SPJA website that AX is a trade show. http://www.spja.com/profile.html Origins is a gaming convention that is owned by GAMA, the adventure gaming industry orgainization. GAMA can be paralleled with the IDSA, which is the parent orgainization for E3. In Japan, there's the 2nd year event called the Tokyo International Anime Fair that took place in March. This event is used to promote anime around the world. It is advertised as a trade show and is promoted through the Japanese Government as such. |
