An online friend of mine said she was asked for her ID when she recently bought the shounen-ai manga, Antique Bakery, from her local Walden's. She thought this was unusual because she's never been asked for an ID to buy shounen-ai manga before, either from Walden's or any other store she's bought manga from. I've never been asked for my ID at my Walden's either, and I've bought several shounen-ai manga from them. In fact, just recently I bought volume one of Loveless from them and they never asked for my ID. Does anyone know if this is going to become a regular thing at all Walden's now or was this just one of those weird instances? Has anyone been asked for an ID when buying manga before? If so, which store was it that you bought it from and what was its rating? What was their reason for asking for your ID and how did you react?

This is the first I've heard of bookstores IDing for manga.

I don't get Yaoi, but I've bought Berserk and Battle Royale at various places with no problems. Perhaps they just figure I'm old enough, but I think they usually just don't care or aren't required to do so.

I've never heard of ID-ing either, though perhaps if your friend looks younger than she is, that could be a reason...I hope that anyone the looked 16 or younger might be ID-ed before being allowed to buy Battle Royale, that is some seriously graphic stuff.

Umm. I've bought the first volume of Battle Royale and I didn't even get any looks from the cashier. Smile I can't remember if it was shrinkwrapped like Berserk normally is.

Battle Royale usually comes shrinkwrapped, at least when I've seen it in stores.

I hope a 12 year old couldn't walk into a store and buy a copy.

I was about 16 (or maybe it was 17, I'm not sure) when the first volume of Battle Royale came out. I bought it at Barnes & Noble and the cashier barely looked at me.

First time I've heard of this happening, to me or anyone I know. I have bought Berserk and I know someone who buys shonen-ai and we've never been ID'd. If I had to take a guess, I'd say this was the choice of the cashier. I have been ID'd for 'M" rated video games, though it doesn't matter because I'm old enough, but then I went back to the same store at another time and got another 'M" game and didn't get ID'd for that. So I think it was the choice of the individual cashier.

Weird. I've looked 15 for the past 8 years and no one's ever given me trouble about it when I buy manga.

With all the M rated games I've bought in the past few months I haven't been ID'd...

It doesn't happen very often to me, I think maybe twice in the past few years. Once again I think it's just the choice of the cashier.

In some stores, the register itself prompts the cashier to ID and the cashier can (sometimes) ignore it or comply. I know I surprised some 16 year old guy when I IDed him for the R movie he wanted. I only did because the register prompted me to and I couldn't figure out how to get past it otherwise. It was obvious by his look that it had never happened to him before. But then that was just his bad luck, as I've only been on the register once in over a year and a half. I've watched cashiers bypass the ID thing for me.

I've never heard of anyone being carded for manga. My guess is they will only card for "M" or "18+" manga, and only if you look younger than 16-18. I doubt anyone would card you for a "16+" even if you looked 12.

Saikano required ID, but the clerk took one look at me and said it was ok. It was shrinkwrapped and had the 18+ sticker on it.

It usually happens when they scan it and it pops up in the system. Only happened once, and it was in a mall bookstore.

I've been to Kinokuniya and there were certain mangas that had an ID required sticker in the shrink wrap (maybe it's because they were Young Animal mangas)

i was with my father once while buying berserk. and they had to notify him that it was an adult book. he thought the whole thing was pretty ludicrous; "i see the sticker, i'm not stupid." i wasnt that young either, probably 15 or 16
