Ooh. Good question.
My bets are on Ghost In The Shell (the 1st movie), Akira, or Spirited Away. |

This is for the US only I think. Spirited Away would be the best selling anime DVD in America. I'm also guessing it's probably the best selling anime DVD worldwide too. |

When you say series, are you talking just one series (eg. Evengelion) or a series that sparked off other sub series (Eg. Gundam) |

I don't know, that's all the information I have. I can guess. For the US, I guess Cowboy Bebop. For Japan, I guess one of the Gundam series. If you're really that interested in knowing, why don't you look for it yourself rather then asking other people. |

I am just talking about one series. Like the example you used Eva.

I would be very surprised if it were not a Miyazaki film. Howl's Castle is currently the only anime title listed on the Amazon top 50 DVD sales, followed by the other two Gibli new releases. Of course the DVDs are timed to come out in a couple of weeks so they are at a higher point. Most of the times there are no anime titles on the top 100 US DVD lists. Zeta II is currently on the top of amazon.co.jp list, but Howl's has been out for some time now so has dropped a bit. I believe Miyazaki tops both lists for all time.

I wonder what the actual units sold are.

We've already established that Spirited Away is the best selling anime DVD in North America and most likely the world. We're talking about anime series now, which wouldn't include any of Miyazaki's major works. |

With regards to highest selling?
is it based on price/units sold or most profitable? |

I don't know about comparing which series is the most successful. After all, its kind of up there when you think about it. Depending on how many episodes are included for each disk, and the total amount of episodes, it kind of leans towards the series that conatin more episodes...
Hypothetically, if something like DBZ grossed more than... say FLCL, it could arguably be due to the more extensive dvd collection of DBZ (there's also depreciation and other things that are too much of a hassle to calculate.) |

Cowboy Bebop would be my choice but you have to think Akira was a very big hit in the US and probubly still is to this day so i would have to say Akira.
