Also, Gunkanjima was in the most recent James Bond film, Skyfall. Distant shots are the actual island, up-close are set reconstructions of actual sites on the island (because it's really not a safe place to have actors). It's a creepy-yet-beautiful place.

Filmed on an island? Really? Okay, better limit those water shots. Afterall, oceans exist only in forbidden lore in the storyline. But alright. Bring it. I'm game. Very Happy

Man, I really want to go to Gunkanjima but I heard that place is off limits. That place is totally rad, I want to see it up close.
I think they won't be really having a shoot in the actual place because it seems too dangerous (plus that place is listed as heritage site, so I wonder if the officials willing to let actors go and play there to promote the site - even with the risk of old buildings may collapse without any notice)

My guess is it'll either just be footage without actors, or they'll take the Skyfall route and recreate parts of the island as sets.

Google employee forced to wander alone on eerie abandoned island for Street View photos

  • Although the island was finally reopened to the public in 2009, after 35 years of being declared off-limits, it’s kind of a hike getting out there

    How to get there

    From Nagasaki station, take a southbound Blue Line streetcar (or walk ten minutes) to Ohato. From there, you’ll see the water and signage for the Nagasaki Ferry Terminal. Inside, buy tickets for the Gunkanjima Cruise at counter seven (4,300 yen, 170 minutes). Tours leave twice daily, barring inclement weather, and advanced booking is essential for weekends and holidays. Don’t wear sandals or high heels, or they’ll make you rent Crocs for 200 yen (or, if your feet are too big, wrap ’em in rope to be safe). For more information, call 095-822-5002 or see http://gunkan-jima.com (Japanese only).

@enurtsol
From what I heard the site is open only for journalist and for other ordinary visitor they'll probably just have a tour on ferry going around the island. But again that's what I heard years ago, so I guess they changed the policy.
