Uhhhhh.... Does he speak English?
Wait, so they're keeping the Japanese setting? That's interesting.... I guess when the characters are cyborgs you can sort of justify white-washing them.

This is the most positive news I've heard about the film so far. Takeshi is a fantastic actor. Although I'm a little confused. If the film is actually set in Japan, why is only one cast member announced so far Japanese? I understand (but still detest) whitewashing, but usually the excuse is that the setting has been rewritten.

Because they're halfheartedly trying to act like they actually care about the source material when in fact having the cast be whitewashed is anything but. It's the token excuse for them to say "see, we have one Japanese guy on board, we're no whitewashing!"

Well, as one of the other users said, all of the characters so far have generally ambiguous names. Motoko is an android, so even if she had a Japanese name if would still be fine as long as long as she was built in Japan. The name Batou, meanwhile, has more of a Russian or Icelandic origin, and The Laughing Man is just an alias so it works fine. Expect the casting to be like the 2013 Wolverine film at best.

they can just change the setting to a western country to explain why the cyborgs look western. motoko has already been a blonde italian.

There are two types of charitable Hollywoods: The half that casts an actor of color as insurance, and the other half that casts multiples to attract a crowd. I'm thinking he's their one token character though because we just love our austere Asian characters
