I never played the original game, but I thought the anime was pretty good.

I love the anime and most would agree its much better than the game. I barely played it, it was a long time but I remember not being impressed, unlike the anime which I didn't like at first but that quickly changed after a few episodes.

I'd buy the VR game, unless the reviews are really horrible.

Gungrave.... The sleeping dog that just doesn't ever rest!

And on VR. Wonderful.

Now, if you mind me, I must go find a copy of Gungrave Overdose. @Levonr I'd give Overdose a go if the first game wasn't that great.
