Who is the audience?
FWIW I read the first few volumes years ago and it's hilarious.

People who don't read manga but watch a bunch of TV? (And people who read this manga back in the day and are nostalgic about it.) These live action series are mostly targeted at people who don't necessarily read manga, but consume a lot of TV, follow actors, etc.
That's why they can get away with completely changing the story, changing characterization, etc. The changes these shows often have are not simply decisions to adapt something to a different medium - they're literally reshaping the source material for an audience who are not familiar with it, and will likely never bother to read it. But they respond well to certain tropes and whatnot so the writers will go out of their way to include them in the story.
