Quote:
Shinichiro Watanabe, the original anime's director, will serve as consultant for the project

"Mr. Watanabe, do you think this script works? By the way, here's a bag of money."

I wouldn't be dazzled by his name in the credits.

I think this maybe an even worse choice than just being a film. We all remember Netflix's take on Death Note, don't we? There is not much assurance in them doing better with Bebop.

Oh dear lord in Heaven, please let this either be quietly buried or just not turn out to be a complete total [expletive] disaster.

Either is favorable.

At least Bebop is a non-Japanese set show, so the argument of whitewashing is not an issue here.

Depends on who they pick for Faye. Isn't she supposed to be Asian of some sort?

I can hardly articulate a proper response to this.

Strange days we're living in.

Something like this would be better off as a side story or sequel instead of a remake. Though Spike's fate was left up in the air.
A live action Cowboy Bepop would need a Star Trek:TNG level budget per episode(about 2.4 million, adjusted for inflation) to even look decent.

The only thing that MIGHT save this version by Netflix would be using Kanno Yoko to compose a new soundtrack for it.

I always thought she was a plant, maybe part Asian, but with a name like "Faye", she seems like an expat, maybe her father teaches English in Singapore (the lion fountains). They were affluent and remember Faye's classmate Sally Young was definitely coded old white money, so maybe they were both part of the same group of wealthy expats.

But I say they go full diversity in this just to mess with a certain subset of fans. Faye is a forty year old Mexican little person with a lazy eye, Ed is a robot that raps all her dialogue, Ein is a talking dog voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait, Jet is played by Richard Belzer, and Spike is a teen boy from Eritrea who never drinks or smokes.

Imagine if they made Vicious into some kind of black-wearing hipster with an odd bird pet, and wields a sword in gun fights because he's edgy and nihilistic.

Oh wait.

I mean, he's done a ton of voice acting work, including a Netflix's Skylanders cartoon... he'd probably be up for it?

I think once the Death Note movie actually came out, the criticisms ended up being less about transplanting the setting into America and more about it just being really schlocky.

(Personally, I thought a white Light and a black L worked pretty well with their original personalities and the new social context, at least in theory. Never saw the finished product.)
