This year's highest grossing (CMIIW) Japanese live-action film, in which Japanese actors playing as Chinese people, is an adaptation of a comic depicting Chinese history, authored by a Japanese.
To call the relationship between the two countries is complex is an understatement.

Sooner or later, The Super Mario Bros Movie was gonna decline in the box office charts. Still, the fact that it held on for so long is impressive.
You'd think that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts would at least make a reasonable profit in Japan, given the mecha genre's popularity in that country. I'm no financial expert but I don't think Paramount would spent a lot of money in that movie just to settle for third place.
Also; no, Disney. Japan will not save your movies. Cut your losses and move on.
