I was bored this evening and I decided to watch Rumbling Hearts with the Japanese audio. I originally watched the English dub. But when I was watching the opening (which I absolutely love, by the way ), depending on whether you use the English or Japanese audio, the opening actually slightly differs. Right when the refrain of the song starts, which is when the feather falls into Mitsuki's hand, the difference occurs.
The Japanese version just shows Haruka turning around and looking offscreen. The English version, on the other hand, does something a bit different. In place of Haruka turning around and looking offscreen, it replaces it with four quick scenes from the first two episodes: Haruka blushing at the bookstore, Haruka turning away and crying, Takayuki hugging Haruka, and then a shot of Haruka smiling at the camera. Also, when Mitsuki grabs the feather right before the refrain, the Japanese version shows her hair waving in the wind, while the English version does not.
That's the only difference I see between the openings. I have no idea why it was modified in this way, it makes no sense, really. Did Funimation do this modification, or was it someone else? Anyone with the DVD can see this firsthand.
Can anyone put some insight of why the opening varies depending on whether it's in English or Japanese?

A quick question: when you start off with Japanese audio, does the disc display the opening with Japanese credits? If that's the case, then it's probably the disc switching to an alternate angle for the OP. When I switch languages, I usually do it in-episode, and I don't have the Rumbling Hearts disc with me here at school, so I can't confirm my hypothesis.
With that said, this isn't the only title I know of where FUNi changed the opening credit sequence. On MoonPhase, the original Japanese openings (angle 1) have a distinct shot for each episode's OP (kinda like Trigun's villain-of-the-week shot). However, the English credits (angle 2) have only used two different openings with the first five episodes.
These kinds of discrepancies bug me a bit; I thought that the R1 companies would know better by now.

Yeah, it's in unsubbed Japanese text for the opening and ending when I ahve it on Japanese language.
And yeah, you would think a company like Funimation wouldn't change or "improve" the openings for their shows. I like both versions of RH's opening, but the Japanese version is a lot more consistent with the rest of the opening.

I love the alternate angle choices on these DVDs which is what controls the language the credits and title card is displayed and is independent from the audio selection. The third volume of Moonphase comes with a nice insert with alll the Hanfuda images. It actually took me a couple of episodes to catch on to this. I didn't notice the change on the Rumbling Hearts DVD since I kept it on the Japanese angle.

Due to my packrat habits, I have fansubs taken from the Japanese TV and DVD versions of Rumbling Hearts on my HD. I'd heard that the opening was slightly redone for the Japanese DVD version, and checking them against the R1 DVD, it seems that Funi has used the alternate angle feature to give us both. English Angle = TV Opening, Japanese Angle= DVD Opening.
