The Garden of Words novel is wildly different from the film and includes a lot of scenes and moments not in it (that honestly makes me like it much more than the film), but that was a 40 minute film with a lot of room for expansion. In contrast the Weathering With You novel (the only other Shinkai novelization I've read) was almost wholely a straight adaptation of the film.

Interesting, I really liked this approach when it was used in Vivy (even if the first half was stronger than the second, probably apropos to the change in writers). Looking forward to watching it.
