This is one of those things that has happened every so often over the years, then doesn't for a while, and then pops up again after one forgets about it

The latest example is the review today for Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. I am thanking my lucky stars I chose to watch the latest episode when it came out yesterday because the thumbnail is a VERY significant spoiler. Just a glance at it says a lot about a plot development I don't think I would've guessed otherwise.

Another recent example is Dragon Ball Daima. An episode has a transformation that was a fun surprise, but was shown as the thumbnail. People complained. Then later in the show there's an even more surprising transformation...which is used as a thumbnail again! More people complained, but this time the author apologized. Had thought everyone probably saw it on social media. Understandable, that happens, it's life.

But that's why perhaps some specific guidelines for authors on thumbnail choices might be nice, like "don't assume everyone is on the same social media feeds getting the same spoilers", to help them not accidentally make assumptions like that.

I get it, showing the big cool moment of the episode is the juciest thing to highlight. But I really don't want to have to resort to turning off images on ANN if I make the error of not watching the latest episode the second it comes out. If I were a newer ANN user and was spoiled this way, I'd probably reconsider frequenting the site at all.

(I'd also say this should apply to the descriptions to some extent too - this is an old example, but one for Megalobox 2 had a non-spoiler thumbnail of a specific character...along with a description that very heavily implies a character dies. Sure enough, that character dies. I still regret my eyes glanced over that while scrolling down for half a second.)

Hi Kicksville,

Thank you for letting me know about this. We want to ensure we're not actively spoiling major twists/developments in episodes on the front page. I've talked to the editor and writing team about this so we can be more mindful of keeping spoilers off the front page when it comes to screenshot selection.
