1-3

This has been a lot of fun so far. The food looks tasty and the edutainment aspects are interesting. I can relate to Kitada's dilemma of having something he loved to do blunted by expectations of being exceptional at it and achieving great things rather than just enjoying playing with its possibilities with no limits. Now he's learning he can do both.

I'm not crazy about his rich girl snobby math rival, but she'll obviously come around. I'm also not sure I agree with the idea of warming the silverware. I'd think that would feel like sitting in a warm chair someone else just got up from (though I'm not sure why that squicks me out - it's not just me, right?). And Napolitan has always sounded to me like something barbaric Americans would do to spaghetti. Now I'm thinking maybe I ought to try it sometime. I wonder if you need to use Japanese ketchup to make it taste like not ketchup on pasta.

Anyway, I think this is a keeper.

Episode 5

I'm happy that this show now has a legit NA release on YT. I'm basically enjoying it, but a couple of things over the last two episodes really bugged me about the lead characters. The first was in episode 4 when Gaku first goes to Kai's house in Tokyo. Kai shows him to a room he says will Gaku's but there is a half-dressed woman in it. Kai proceeds to treat her like complete garbage, including throwing her clothes out the window. I get it, Kai is supposed to be a huge a-hole but that really put me off.

Then in Episode 5, Gaku is reunited with his blonde female friend Uomi, the one who got a swimming scholarship. She's on crutches and has been deliberately seeking him out in the area around the restaurant she knows he is working at. She's made him a lunch in case she did bump into him. It's clear she is going through a rough time, just like he is and her injury is going to take 2 months to heal.

Gaku gets inspired by the lunch she has made and so immediately decides to speed off. He offers absolutely no words of sympathy, encouragement or even just simple acknowledgment over her plight. It's all about his situation. Frankly, I think this makes him an even bigger a-hole than Kai. I was hoping that the show was going to address this by the end of the episode but it didn't. Ugh.

If Gaku never bothers offering Uomi some comfort or sympathy I'm gonna be super pissed off.

For Kai, I think a lot of his assertive personality is because he takes his cooking very seriously. From what I've seen in movies and documentaries about chefs, kitchens can be a very hardcore workplace. The only reason Kai is giving any kind of leniency to Gaku is because of the potential.

That being said, I think Gaku has some major insecurity issues that make him a little irritating to watch, sometimes. He didn't do as well as he had hoped with the math stuff, but seems to get a lot of joy out of cooking and finding himself. But then he gets a little too absorbed in the process and may or may not realize the missing piece to making that perfect dish.

I think that obsession for perfection is, both, his strength and weakness. It's a quality I see in workaholics or people with a big chip on their shoulder. I'm a bit of the latter, so I can empathize with Gaku, a little. Although, I'm admittedly way less naive and obtuse than he is, hence the occasional irritation.

I don't think Gaku means to be an a-hole. But I do feel his obsession and insecurities inadvertently make him come off as one.

This show is now on Amazon Prime and open for legit streaming. I thought I'd mention that since Amazon Prime probably won't. I stumbled on it by accident anyhow, and I've decided to watch it one episode a week on Saturdays, adding it to my already bulging anime watchlist.

I enjoyed the first episode. It's got the foodie thing going, but it's also got an undercurrent of drama cooking beneath the surface.

Piggles, if you're out there and you've never seen this show, I think it might be up your desperate for some slice of life alley Wink
