Partly agree and partly disagree with Andrew's take on the first half, but I am glad to see it getting a review since I thought all throughout the Spring season that it not getting voted in for weekly coverage was an oversight by fans.
Will completely agree that the first episode was great, that the rest could have been more, and especially that that series has a wonky sense of organization; it flashes forward to 2009 on a handful of occasions, only to revert again to events (primarily) in the 1850s. Also agree that the series might have worked better had it shown Jinya's progressive advancement through the ages, though I have enjoyed the 1850s-era character dynamics.
In fact, the latter carries the series well enough that I kinda wished the series hadn't flashed-forward, as it now seems like the series is engaged in what could be a very prolonged period of catch-up. (That being said, the scene where Jinya arrives at the modern-day Jinya Shrine and learns that his village chief kept his promise to make sure that the shrine would always be around for him to return to was one of the best post-first-ep scenes.) Still, I haven't found the additional battles to be that bad, and especially not enough to weight down the grade that much. The series' fairly extensive use of symbolism also isn't being given enough credit.
In short, this was more a B/B+ range series overall for me.

The way this review rags on the battle scenes feels hugely undeserved, and kind of baffling honestly. Especially since I find most of them to be quite engaging. Perhaps only serviceable at the absolute worst, but never anything close to what I'd call "bad."
Anyway, this has been a very well done series, and I'm really excited to continue on into the second half. It's a shame that it seems to be so underrated.

The time jump at the end of the first episode feels out of place considering outside of the episode with the play (which I enjoyed and thought was a good framing device) the entire story takes place "in the past". I was expecting more time jumps to get to the present, but considering how slowly the story is moving forward in time, it just seems odd to "spoil" the fact that Jinya will be fine in the present at the end of the first episode, especially when it's so rarely relevant.

I find the way the review describes the anime to be very similar to the way I feel about the novels. The pacing and story structure is strange. The action scenes aren't bad, but not as good as you expected. But although you can't exactly say it's great, there are other things this series has that make it oddly charming and unique.
In a way, you can say the anime is a surprisingly faithful adaptation, with all its source's warts and all. It's the kind of the story you don't really look forward to, but makes you feel glad once you finish it.
Slight spoiler: the story later on gets more action and antagonists once it reaches the Taisho era.

Me I don't like reviewing a series until it ends or there's a long break. Personally, I really enjoy the series a lot. I love the horror aspect. Sometimes the stories have happy endings and sometimes they are sad or ironically beautiful in a way. You never know what you are going to get.
I do find the entire time spanning thing odd since the show mainly focuses on one specific era when they have 100s of years to play with, but I like the core cast too. Keeps things familiar and it's fun to check in on everybody week to week.
