That is what made is so unique and entertaining.

I feel like tonal dissonance is almost a trademark of anime, manga etc.
Barring the occasional exception we almost never see it to the same degree in western media.
I think about how dark and edgy a lot of Berserk is and yet it still has a comedic character like Puck injecting wacky humour into the proceedings.
I don't really mind reviewers pointing out the tonal dissonance in the anime they are reviewing but I feel like they should be used to a certain amount of it by now.

I've not watched the anime yet, but I've been reading the manga* and find it very entertaining. It kind of reminds me of The Eminence in Shadow, because like Cid constantly bullshitting yet somehow being right (even though he doesn't realize it), all of Liam's attempts to be evil just end up being good (and he doesn't realize it). Like he thinks he's being a cruel ruler by enforcing heavy tax rates on his populace but he's actually taxing less than his parents were and his people love him for it. There's way more I could go into but since this is just the anime (and like I said, I haven't watched yet so I don't know how far it goes) I would say it's definitely worth checking out if you like Eminence in Shadow.
*it cuts out a lot of the sex-bot stuff that's apparently in the LN (and the show?) so it's definitely the way to consume the product if that's what's putting you off the story.

@Richard Eisenbeis
I don't see why you dinged it for its tone. After the first episode his shit life on Earth is only used as a reference point. Also and more importantly you left out the reason his life was shit to begin with. . . like I don't know maybe the whole EVIL God screwing him over might have played a part, the same EVIL God that gave him his new life. Maybe it is just me but that might be an important detail you left out of the review.
Also the Anime does this rare thing of only adapting the first LN of the series when as of last month 9 are translated and 15 LNs are out in Japan. So we are getting a very long look at just what is basically the prologue of the greater story.
Edited for spelling errors.

A very fair review. I came into this show not expecting much aside from the "death by cucking" I heard from mother's basement. Yet somehow by the last episode, I felt like it was a very worthy watch. 6-7 rating, but I was expecting a 4. It seems like a parody but it felt like the creators were telling the story genuinely. Idk but somehow it works.

Yeah, it's weird how the review missed the most important point even though it got a lot of details right, a case of missing the forest for the trees I guess.
The element about the evil god setting up Liam for failure, so he can rejoice in his failure, just for Liam to end up taking advantage of whatever is thrown at him. I assume that happened because the anime overstretched the first arc Tom ridiculous lengths.i mean, Liam is not even in elementary school yet.
Also, this is very similar to eminence in the shadows or overlord, without all the maliciousness to the secondary characters. Like a minor joke hee would be Liam increasing. The taxes of the population to make them suffer , amagi obliges, Liam forgets about it, then we learnt that all the tax money is being invested in public health and infrastructure so the populace is actually happier after the tax hike.

Leave it to Mother's basement to describe getting fucked over by an EVIL God as "death by cucking". Seriously why listen/watch him if he is this wrong on something as innocuous
as this? Did basement boy even mention the evil god? You know 1 of the main driving forces of not only the anime but the LNs in general?

The moral of this story is that everyone needs a loyal dog by their side to cock-block an evil deity from doing bad things to you.

While I generally agree with Richard's evaluation, I would rate the series a notch higher across the board. For me, the biggest flaw was the way the series seemed to be needlessly stretching things out. (And after hearing that this season only adapts one novel, that makes more sense.) Curious to see where things go from here, so I'll definitely be back for a second season if one gets made.

you two huh?
i personally think that liam is basically what would happen if cid kageno and naofumi iwatami were to fuse together.
for he got the best part that made cid tollerable, but also at time have the same BS that made naofumi such and unlikable character!
at least liam gets somewhat batter later on in the source materials!

I actually had a lot of fun with this. Sure there's plenty of wish fulfillment, power fantasy, etc. but it's so sincere and bold in it and also hilarious with a likeable cast once you get to know them...that I enjoyed it from start to finish.
