-SqEx AI: I swear, this is just SqEx finding the latest shiny object again which has been a long running issue with them. And interesting for them to be fooling around with this nonsense wee GenAI has had its worst week yet between Open AI shutting down a chatbot, Disney killing a deal, and Wikipedia banning LLM written articles. Gonna be funny when the next pivot happens

-Tanabe: Dude's had a good career, hopefully Risa Tabata takes up whatever Retro is doing next.

-Patricia: The Zelda notes were and interesting bit of seeing Hyrule. Also amusing one of the ones for Tears of the Kingdom had some foreshadowing for Age of Imprisonment.

Anyway, back to the Trails in the Sky remake

I don't think a random person with 46 followers on Bluesky of all places is indicative of Japan's attitude on something as a whole. Saying Japan's Dragon Quest fanbase has turned on Square-Enix because of that is such ridiculous hyperbole. Those are some extreme cherries being picked here.

If you had a real reason not to believe this person then you wouldn't need to resort to something as utterly trivial as a social media follower count. Especially since most popular social media account follower lists are swarming with bots anyway. Popularity is not an indicator of truth.

Square-Enix has been mindlessly following empty tech industry trends for the last several years and it's hurt their reputation with fans in the US and Japan, leading to multiple high-profile flops. It seems pretty absurd to assume that Japanese fans wouldn't take notice of this, especially given that Dragon Quest is far more popular in Japan than it is anyplace else.

The Dragon Quest news isn't surprising (Yuji Horii has been interested in basically this exact idea of an in-game assistant who can respond to you directly since working on Portopia in the early 80s). But not to be too dismissive of it, but I'll save my doom and gloom for if it shows up in something that isn't the MMO that is sunsetting after the next expansion

Apparently they're retconning tons of stuff with Alex in a patch including reaching deep and rewriting events in SF3 according to the dataminers. Lame. Old Capcom woulda have stuck to their guns and told people who got offended to deal with it Rolling Eyes

"They woulda kept the incest!" is not the flex you think it is.

Speak for yourself. OG Capcom fans know the way things used to be. But given they removed R.Mika's butt slap back in 5 after people complained I'm not surprised they're changing things again. And here I thought Capcom was actually going back to showing a backbone with Alex's story and being interesting again.

I see no issue with an interactive AI companion in Dragon Quest. It sounds like a fun idea and if Yuji Horii is fully interest in it I see no reason to go against one of the three father's of Dragon Quest here when it comes to his own series. I'm sure some of the more vocal western fans will complain but it's not like the game is even released in the west anyway so it literally does not affect them at all and Horii has no reason to listen to them.

I haven't really played SF6 so I don't know what's being retconned or going on but if don't like a retcon they can just ignore it. Despite whatever they may do companies can't go back and change past games. It's actually quite easy to just ignore retcons and changes in future games or from patches. Street Fighter III wlil always be what it is no matter what afterwords or future games try to rewrite. We know what we played back then, and can still play now.

... What "old Capcom"? The Capcom that renamed Hitler into "Master D" in Bionic Commando? The Capcom that recolored Birdie as a Black man and explained his appearance in Street Fighter 1 as him having a cold? The Capcom that replaced female enemies in Final Fight 1 with new male sprites? What freaking "old Capcom" are you even talking about?!

Same way Capcom stuck to killing off Zero in X, X5, & Zero 4?

Or kept their feminine appearances but edited their outfits to be less revealing in the American Version of Final Fight CD. Which also changed Damnd & Sodom’s names. They even edited Belger’s wheelchair because paraplegic’s can’t be evil.

Patricia Summersett always makes for consistently good and insightful interviews. She really brought the character of Zelda to life in this era of the series, as she always made for a warm and welcome presence.

I don't really care much about SF6 but I find it very disturbing to see people on the internet getting so mad about it. And by "it" I mean Capcom addressing it. A downright uncomfortable amount of people just falling over themselves to say that it's fine and pointing to historical examples and citing Japanese laws. Like, people are calling the game "woke" and "catering to westerners who find it 'problematic'", and I'm like is that the threshold here? Defending cousin marriage is the hill people are willing to die on?

The idea is "because 'woke' people don't like it, it must be defended." That's it, nothing deeper than that. Basic reactionary thought.

Naming a bunch of instances of American censorship shouldn't really be counted here since that's on America, not Japan or Capcom. Japan was fine with the original versions of all those cases and then some. Although I do wonder how much stuff would be censored even in Japan these days if things were re-released given how these days games get censored during production so there's no longer different versions of a game between regions so Japan unfortunately has to deal with the lowest common denominator determining what content they're allowed to have in video games. People really shouldn't be surprised at the backlash though, Street Fighter and the FGC in general attracts a lot of people with hang-ups on issues like sex or anything that could be deemed 'weird Japan'.

Now I'm wondering if they're going to keep Roll having a crush on her brother for Mega Man 12 or if that's going to be quietly retired as well.

Yeah after all the very tangible damage to people's livelihoods caused by ever-greater pushes towards mass censorship over the last year, I would think people had started to realize that maybe an author writing something weird in fiction isn't the end of the world and it's ok to exist because it ultimately isn't harming anybody. But I guess not
