Okay, the first one is Grok being typically AI-stupid and leaping to a connection to Madoka where there wasn't one.

That second post, on the other hand, that isn't a 'mistranslation.' That's Grok straight-up going, "I made it tf up." Rolling Eyes

I would've thought after the "Mecha Hitler" incident, Grok would've been shut down, but then again, that would require someone running TXwitter correctly these days.

AI translations for series names on twitter are generally hit or miss. I've even seen it confuse a couple voice actors with unrelated ones on occasion. I remember a couple seasons back Watanare would always be translated as Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon, and recently Shiboyugi would be shown as either Death Note or Yugioh.

I can see where they're getting that idea from, but...

That to be the expected as those are not translation engines but predictive text ones.

Right. It amounts to what would happen if a person recognizes a couple words and assumes they know what the whole sentence says. If the theories on what happened are correct, it's pretty wild that it would latch onto something unrelated because two things are both in April.

That second "translation" though seems more like a hallucination.

This amounts to relying on a translation from someone who has picked up a couple words here and there and confidently assumes they can guess at entire sentences.

OK, to be honest, as much as I hate Grok being used to do AI generated undressing images. But seeing Grok mistranslating Witch on the Holy Night into Madoka Magica is freaking hilarious. Laughing

Yeah, Grok is notoriously bad when it comes to Japanese anime/manga titles, oftentimes going with an entirely different series that's simply in the same genre that's more well known if the actual title isn't anywhere near as popular. However, it's also at the same time very inconsistent as it could get the name wrong on one tweet, followed by the literal next tweet (on the same screen) getting the name perfectly right.

Use DeepL if you want a good machine translator. Grok is more for memes/art and fact checking

Grok is unreliable in at least one of those tasks.

I was thinking of DeepL when reading this article. People consistently use these "AIs" under assumptions about what they are and can do, and then find out that they aren't very good at doing things they weren't programmed to do.

Well, entering Fate/Grand Order's original post into DeepL also returns the wrong names for Witch on the Holy Night (mistranslated as "聖夜の魔女") and other game terms. These automated translation systems still face the same issues, such as missing context in this case.
