It says so on the Death Note ANN page but I'm disinclined to believe something like that, I hope some one can tell us how this person might have found out.

Well I do know something about it because I went to the Mega Con 2007 voiceover panel. Vic Mignogna, Lex Lang, and Sandy Fox were on it. Vic was actually talking about auditioning for Death Note, but couldn't because he said Viz was sending it to Canada.

DN is very dialogue heavy, and while California might have many "cool" sounding VAs their weaknesses become apparent when they have a lot of dialogue. Ocean Studios hires actors/actresses who have both bases covered; they've got "cool" sounding voices AND can work well with a lot of talk.

A very wise decision, I must say; granted, I think DN is a pretty poor anime adaption, but fastening a superb Ocean dub onto it will likely raise the production quality a couple pegs.

The other difference is a little interesting between Canada and LA. Canadian Dub actor are first and foremost generally all-around actors but I'm not here to bash dub va's. I'm just saying Canadian Dub actors generally have a bit more experience in terms of theatre and television acting, so they are a little better when it comes to dialogue.

Ocean did not pick up Death Note, they're just dubbing it. Ocean is just a voiceover studio, not a distributor.

Except that the company existed before you added. Thanks, now we have another duplicated company. Rolling Eyes

I figured commas got caught by the system. Not like the duplicate was already a duplicate of The Ocean Group. They just re-incorporated.

Eh, it can just be deleted from the Death Note listing anyway.

How the hell is DN a poor anime adaptation? It's the same thing as the manga. There are even entire dialogues that match exactly between the anime manga. If by "poor adaptation" you're referring to how they're so close there is almost no variety between the two then I agree but otherwise is tantamount to saying the manga sucks as well.

I've recieved some complaints about "getting to the point" as of late, so, for your convenience, my thesis:

Quote:

DN's "anime" is not exactly an "anime".

There are some stories that simply do not mesh well in different types of entertainment; DN is exactly that. As far as an anime goes, it doesn't arrive at par for being an "animated adaption" of the DN story, since "animated" implies there's been changes to make the story suitable to be told through television. Or rather, scripting for television requires a different "style" of writing than for radio, plays, books, comic books, or even manga.

What we see in DN is a whole twenty two minutes of a bunch of well-drawn characters endlessly lip-flapping to a motherload of complicated dialogue, with whatever deviant "animation" from this status quo focusing on a lot of trivial activities, like, say, L falling out of a chair or Light eating a bag of chips. To counter-balance the heavy-dialogue, DN over-dramaticizes horribly minor stuff.

So, I ask, what is the point of making this an anime? If there's not much animation and not all that movement, it's basically a radio-drama with pictures; the transition from "manga" to "anime", "book" to "televison" wasn't fully made, and despite the high production value, it is so simmilar to the manga one such as I finds it stressfully boring.

I do agree that a show/movie has to have a different presentation than a manga or book would use but that isn't what the process of animating a manga entails. As long as the pictures move and the words are spoken then it's been animated.

I can see where you're coming from to a degree but i don't really understand what you expect from the production company to do in terms of meeting your expectations. Yes, they have stayed unusually close to the source material but without changing the plot into borderline non-cannon filleresque there aren't many ways to add action into Death Note. The show centers around cerebral combat between a pair of hyper-geniuses and a weapon that kills through heart attacks. Unless someone got the bright idea of making it so that the shinigami who owned the book went out and fought everyone whose name was in it then I don't see how they would make it action oriented; and needless to say, if they did that then the show would either be a colossal failure or a standalone series from the manga.

And the scenes you mentioned are equally dramatized in the manga. They just seem less relevant when they're put into animated from. I didn't find that the show was poorly compensating for a lack of visual action but thats because I knew what to expect. Really, I just think you're approaching the series with the wrong attitude in mind if you think it fails as an anime. It definitely differs from the mainstream presentation but not only is it enjoyable to have some anime be very dialogue heavy; Death Note isn't even close to being unique in this. Shoujo anime are typically very wordy, as are mystery anime. Monster is an absolutely fantastic anime and it goes for extended stretches with very little action. The show even goes for half season stretches without action but has a very riveting story and powerful dialogue which keeps watchers entertained. Death Note does the same thing.

Also... there are people who haven't actually read the manga yet (and admittedly, I didn't start mainly because I heard that Madhouse was adapting it into animation around the time it caught my interest... so, you know... might as well wait *and I've been waiting a LOOOOONG time... in fact, I haven't even seen this yet... just checked half an episode to check out the awesome production values*).

Since Death note was something that many felt could only work in manga format, I'd say that the Anime adaption's greatness is superb! ease up a bit and consider how hard it was for them to edit the format for TV whilst keeping it interesting, i think it was phenomanal!

This is great news, I've been wondering when DN was coming over and who was going to dub it. Although I guess it's not official that Ocean is doing it; at least we know that it's on the way.

It was actually said at Megacon a couple of weeks ago it was going to Ocean.
