A major plot point in FMA is Equivalent Exchange. Just in some cases thru the series, i'm wondering if there is some severe repercussions when alchemists do some act (And i'm not taking about bringing human beings back to life or the hommoculi), but what is it exactly?
Case in point: In spoiler[The Other Brothers Elric, Ed creates an earthen berm to contain the liquefied philosophers stone from engulfing Xenotime. ] Just one question: does that act have repercussions elsewhere? Does a landslide happen elsewhere? Do building foundations collapse? (Hey, that might explain why Aquroya in The Phantom Thief is going under the water.) |

The way the alchemy in their universe works is:
Spoilers for the end of FMA and the movie: spoiler[Their world is connected to our world through the gate. The real truth of the matter the two worlds are more intricately connected than one would think. I think the explained that the energy used to create alchemy springs from the lifeforces of people in our world and in order to bring back to life somebody who has died in one universe somebody from the other is killed.] Or something like that it's been way too long since I last saw the series. I'm waiting for the upcomming boxsets to rewatch it. |

Yeah that's correct. spoiler[Whe someone dies in our world (the real world you mite say) the energy from their life (life energy) is recycled and is where the alchemists get their power.] They don't know this however. They only defintely find out in the movie. Possibly even the last few episodes of the series. I'm a bit hazy as it's been a while since I've seen it.
When Ed makes the wall to pool the liquid stone, I'm gessing he'll have just been pulling earth from the ground to do so. Maybe there would have been a casm below created from the removed earth? That's maybe looking a bit too much into though

Well, the idea of equivilant exchange doesn't have as much to do with something bad happening if you perform alchemy as it does just simply having to give something in return of equil value. Like in human transmutation, that basically means a life for a life, blood and flesh for blood and flesh. I mean, if you remember the explanation in the first episode when he fixed that radio, he was talking about how he could return it to it's original form, he just couldn't do anything else to enhance it, since the laws of equivilant exchange prevent it because of this fact. Which of course why human transmutation is so hard because you can't recreate a living soul without giving one, right? So basically, in that case, yeah, something bad will happen in exchange, but I wouldn't think it would for anything else.
To make it maybe a little more understandable, the basic 3 steps are what now? 1. gather all of the elements that make up the thing you are transmuting 2. deconstruct those elements and 3. reconstruct them in the form of whatever you're creating. So basically, if you look at the first step, the elements that you need to gather kind of acts as the equivilant exchange, so I don't think there'd be anything more it'd need so long as those elements are provided. So in that case, I'd say what voddas said is quite reasonable. Ed probably just used elements in the ground to make up the wall he used.
Yeah, it's actually explained in episode 50 I believe, whatever the episode is after spoiler[Ed goes to our world via the gate. Hoenheim explains it all to him when talking about the purpose of the 2 worlds.] |
