Just found this NYTimes Business article talking about how Hulu apparently values the small-but-dedicated fanbase for foreign shows that are a lot cheaper to acquire than the CW.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/29/business/media/hulu-and-netflix-gain-an-advantage-with-anime.html?_r=2&smid=tw-nytimesbusiness&seid=auto

Quote:
“Networks might be happy to get a show that 20 million people kind of like,” said Andy Forssell, Hulu’s senior vice president for content. “We’re more interested in finding a show that a million people love to death.”

They're even making a deliberate effort to get more K-Drama.

How many people here pay for Hulu Plus and feel like it's worth $8 to be able to stream a bunch of subbed anime legally from the comfort of your couch? The last time I tried a trial, all the stuff I was interested in was web-only. Do they still do that?

I think some might. FYI, most pirate, but for ones that don't its either Crunchyroll or the The Anime News Network.

Last I checked, Hulu isn't really that big on anime. Well I could be wrong.

I usually resort to Hulu if I need to stream episodes of anime when any of my not-so-legal sources have choppy video quality. While the video quality is good from my personal experiences with Hulu, I wouldn't even consider getting Hulu Plus as even with the greater accessibility options, you still get stuck with ads that interrupt you during the broadcast and would be a bit of a pain to deal with if you have a monthly data cap from your ISP (have wireless with only a 20 GB data cap). Not the case when I use Netflix though I have to admit that their anime offerings are kind of slim and I'm getting close to the point where I'm considering killing my streaming plan with them and switching to a DVD-only rental plan.

I don't have Hulu plus since I don't mind sitting through ads (and doesn't plus still have some ads?) and I really like how well they're player seems to work. I do wish they would label their shows as subs or dubs (usually I have to look at the user submitted tags to figure it out) but that's my only complaint about them.

That's a very interesting article. I'm not really into streaming unless it's directly to my PS3, like Netflix. I've been meaning to check out Hulu.

Quote:
The shows that resonate in the United States tend to be action-driven, with lots of violence, as well as sexually provocative shows. The small but avid audience is made up of mostly male viewers aged 18 to 34. Distributors said comedies, sports shows and anything aimed at women tend to not work

Is this really true? I mean I love Elfen Lied and such, but almost all of my rewatching is of comedies and non-violent dramas.

It's funny that they say that, but then also say that they are working to have more K-Drama put on the site. I'm pretty sure the viewer demographics for K-Drama are decidedly female. I also know that on Crunchyroll for instance, Shugo Chara is consistently one of the most popular shows.

EDIT: I would guess it's most likely Hulu execs not realizing that shows like Hitman Reborn, Inuyasha, Blue Exorcist, D Grayman, etc. are all shows that are huge hits with a female audience.

I'd consider Plus if it were ad free, but since it isn't, I generally avoid Hulu, and rely on Netflix/Crunchyroll, instead.

I just can't stand ads these days.

On occassion Hulu brings in a decent series that's worth watching or marathoning, but often their anime selection is just old junk that they probably licensed for dirt cheap. Compared to other online viewing options Hulu hardly compares.

This is not true. There are alot of K-dramas that are targetted towards woman, but there are also many that attract males and females alike. I never liked the term K-Dramas, because not all of them are "dramas". There are plenty that are filled with action, and portray historic events or figures of accient Korea. My mom was born and raised in Korea. She had many female Korean friends with American husbands. Many of those husbands were really into K-dramas like Emperor of the Sea or Jumong, which are things that I enjoy as a guy.

By the way, Hulu Plus does still have advertisements. Something I was very dissapointed with when I subscribed. But I continue to subscribe, because they have some stuff that Netflix doesn't have available, and I hate watching stuff on my computer. But I'd much rather watch things through Netflix instead.

I dislike Hulu. They could stop blocking users in regions where the rights holders have no problem selling the same product as they do in the US.

I dislike Viz even more given all of their internet streaming presence is in the form of Hulu streams. Yeah, way to treat the fans of your properties in Canada.

I usually only use hulu if I have to. I prefer to use youtube because I'll only get one ad at the very start of the video and half the time if it's over 30 seconds, I can skip it after 5 seconds. If it's a comedy, I don't mind ads as much since they give me a breather (example, South Park, I use their player thing all the time), but on something where I want the next scene right now, it's a royal pain, so I like to get the ads out of the way all at once. Sometimes I'll refresh a hulu page until I get one long starting ad or I'll give up after the 10th time and deal with it. The thing about using hulu is that if I'm not super in love with the show, having to sit through so many ads during the show (like I said, start of the show is doable), I'm more likely to drop the show I find.

But yeah, since I live in America, I totally forgot about you...guys who don't live in America, clearly this sucks big time for you guys. A lot of you are trying to do the legal thing but hulu doesn't work in your country Sad

I love Hulu, its a great website for high streaming quality with a pretty good selection. In fact I like it so much that I've subscribed to Hulu Plus and us it regularly. But here's the catch, I don't use it to much for anime. Its anime selection is ok with a few jewels in there that I absolutely love, but has allot of anime that I could care less about. Of course this can also be said for Crunchyroll. I mostly use Hulu because they have now exclusive access to streaming Criterion films so I can get my fix of great foreign and domestic films. If your a fan of Criterion it is a must have, and if you want to get access to allot of amazing Japanese films you should look into it.

But what RedSwirl said about Hulu appealing to niche markets is obvious. They do have quite an extensive selection of anime and other foreign shows and actively try to license more. On top of that, they bend over backwards to keep the distributors happy. Just look at Criterion (going back to this again), they left Netflix after they realized that some of the videos were in poor quality. After leaving Netflix, Hulu offered Criterion a shinny new streaming home with HD quality videos and a whole section devoted just to that company. And just recently, after many complaints, Hulu removed the "Hulu" watermark from all the Criterion streams to make the film fanatics happy. I'd say that's devotion to the fans.

Well, until this season I've preferred Hulu to Funimation's site or Youtube for Funimation's new streams. Along with the new deal with NicoNico they've now switched things up a little. The only way to watch their new streams on Hulu during the first week is with Hulu Plus. Sad

Actually, spent most of the past day catching up with Eureka and Fringe on Hulu. Not much need for cable if you have Hulu and a couple other sources.

This anime fan wouldn't touch HULU with a 10-foot pole.

For those that like sitting through 2 minutes if ads before the shows begin, have at it. Me, I'll stick with CR, or *ahem* downloads.

I use the free version of Hulu all the time. I don't mind the commercials because I am not paying.

However since I am paying for Cruncyroll (and they have more anime I am interested in) I don't see the need to pay for Hulu+. As someone else mentioned I believe they still have commercials with Hulu+ and if I am paying I find that unacceptable.

Actually the only reason I would subscribe to Hulu+ in the future is not for their anime selection but because they now have an exclusive deal with Criterion.
