Before I start, let me assure you that I've been out of touch with the anime community for a long time (the last time I saw NGE was 4 years ago, but I still remember it was great), but now I want to get back into it.
I was wondering, what's the difference between Death & Rebirth and The End Of Evangelion? I know that Death is a summary of the TV episodes, but is Rebirth the same as The End Of Evangelion? Also, are the movies the official ending, and episodes 21-24 (or similar) have now become a director's cut? Thanks. |

Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion go together. The end of Rebirth is set up for EoE. now to my knowledge EoE is actually just an alternate ending to the series. I personally prefer the series ending but that is me.

Rebirth is only the first part of the End of Evangelion, EoE is rebirth and what happens next. |

Rebirth is the first part of the first episode in End of Evanglion (episode 25': Air).
I would assume that both the movie and the tv shows are 'official,' but the movie supposedly follows the original script for episode 25 that was cut due to several problems. And yes, ADV recently released the first 3 Director's Cut episodes on the Resurrection DVD. It also contains the original broadcast versions of those 3 episodes. The Director's Cut of episode 24, as well as the broadcast versions of 24-26, will be included on the Genesis Reborn DVD due out in sometime in March. |

The official Ending of NGE is the Movies. The movies were created due to just how strange the last two episodes were and the fans outcry therefore the official ending of the series are Rebirth and End also known as episode 25 Air and Episode 26 my pure heart.

I've heard that the 25th episode of Eva was originally going to be basically what Rebirth wound up being; an action-intensive episode that sets up the Human Instrumentality Project and gives closure to that side of the plot, leaving the final episode as a sort of coda to deal with the internal aspects of the story. They chose not to do it because they didn't have the capital to do it right. If they had I think the big Eva controversy would pretty much not have happened. I don't think people would be bothered by the nature of the final episode if they'd gotten the full plot closure the original plan provided for.
