How much is too much? I believe Amazon.com is selling this box set for around $160 is that a good deal?

Seems a bit pricey.

The only thing I see are the bootleg versions on eBay. Those are roughly $40 -$80. I am not a supporter of bootlegs.

So if I could find a retail box set for around $100. That would be a good deal, right? Or is that too low of a price?

I paid two hundred dollars for my EVA perfect collection and it was worth every cent. The thing is though after I bought it a couple of months later they were selling it for only one hundred dollars Sad . If you love the show it shouldn't matter what the cost but I would keep looking if I were you. Oh yeah bootlegs suck don't be tricked into buying them.

Good point, blackswordsman. $100 may be on the low side HeyZeus, but you should be able to find a set for near $130.

Try checking out http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com If they have it, that's probably the cheapest you'll find it.

If you dont mind taking the risk, use ebay. I got mine for below $100. It was brand new. I think i got it for like $80-90, a great price for it. So ebay is good, but only if your carful and dont mind taking a slight risk.

[Mods, read Tempest's post below before doing anything]

I've got to chime in here...

I actually recommend the HK version of the Eva set (well that's only if you can't understand Japanese in which case I recommend the latest Gainax set which remastered with 5.1 audio and quite frankly is the best I've ever seen the series look).

There are 2 reasons for me recommending HK versions over ADVs.

Let me start by saying the subtitling is actually very good on both the bootleg and the official issue DVDs. Uncanningly good actually, I think the HK subs were derived from US fan subs done long before the series was picked up by ADV in the West.

The first reason I recommend the HK versions is...well they look better I hate to say. I've actually found this to be a consistant problem with every ADV DVD I've seen. For some reason they go with a generic bit rate throguh the entire episode, and for a show like eva which has lots of sharp reds and contrast....

Now keep in mind I am watching on HDTV so I am especially picky about the quality of mastering on my discs. The only version I presently watch of eva is the Red Box that came out about a year ago...It was $400 including shipping but worth every dime. It also has no subs.

The second and msot grevious problem with the ADV discs is that ADV altered a bunch of the animation by replacing Japanese with English, and doing a very poor job of it. Pretty much all those black and white screens with sans serif English text that look totally out of place, because they were burned onto video instead of being shot on film properly, are an eye sore on the ADV releases that have yet to be addressed.

I consider this to be a major major issue. Now not all people take Eva as seriously as I do (and I take it pretty damn seriously) but something which provides such a significant aethestic to the show has been castrated and replaced with something that took less than 1 second of effort is a practically a crime against humanity IMHO.

Manga Entertainment did it right with their handling of the End of Eva and Death and Rebirth (though I wish they'd released the full-version of D&R and not the one that had been abreviated and altered for The Revival of Evangelion theatrical release in April 98).

Enough of this bitter old anime fan, but please take an old man's word to heart young ones Anime smile

The best way to shoot yourself in the foot on ANN? Promote bootleg usage. Confused

They only put overlays on the first disc. They stopped after that, and even re-released the first volume overlay-free.

Um...what? So tell me again how changing such amazing signs as the train schedule is castrating the show. Like I said, they stopped doing overlays with the first volume, and I doubt there were any bits of onscreen text in the first four episodes that was all that painfully vital.

Anyway, if you take Eva so seriously, why the hell are you telling people to give both ADV and GAiNAX the finger and buy bootlegs?

No. Don't. As if Zac, Cookie, & Bamboo haven't said it enough already, bootlegs are bad!

Before the other mods chime in here, do not delete this post.

I do not avocate what Eva05 is saying, but he isn't breaking any rules in technicality or in spirit by expressing support for a bootleg.

As long as there is nothing in a post that tells how to find such a bootleg (either by linkingdirectly to one, or by stating what kind of site it can be found on) the post is fine.

I'm not going to censor opinions... well, not today at least.

Of course the HK version is "better" than the domestic version. That's because the HK version stole the remastered version and added subtitles.

That doesn't justify anything; it only says that the _Gainax-remastered R2 DVDs_ are better than the _ADV R1 DVDs_, and that the HK bootleggers stole the better product, slapped on a subtitle script and let it loose into the world.

Yes, welcome to piracy. You don't use VHS masters if you have a DVD available. You don't use the low quality DVDs if you can steal the high quality ones instead.

I should note that I have deleted or edited posts just like eva05's quite often before, and have no qualms about doing so again. In fact, that's exactly what I suggested we do when this was brought to my attention.

I'm willing to allow a wide range of opinions, but suggesting a bootleg over a legitimate release is not one of them... particularly when the obvious answer is _buy the R2 DVDs_, since that's where the HK bootlegs came from.. which is what eva05 even SAYS he does -- $400 is a good deal for R2 DVDs.

I'm locking this thread.
