This is mainly a question for the people here at ANN.Anyway,I was wondering just how successful is the anime industry here in the U.S. Is it a million/billion dollar industry? And what kind of businesses profit the most from this industry? Companies like ADV or Bandai? Or companies that specialize in other anime related goods?

Sorry. I thought someone else with more knowledge would've answered this.

And as to your question, I suppose it depends. Anime is obviously very successful since companies like ADV, Bandai, and Geneon continue to produce anime. I'd say they each make money in the millions.

As for anime related goods, do you mean anything other than DVDs, like toys, music, or whatever? I haven't seen much of those because most of the money comes from the media releases. I think... Confused. Sorry, can't answer that part.

Also remember that revenue doesn't mean profit.

Specific numbers are very elusive within the anime industry, in no small part because the companies are privately held; no public accountability is necessary.

We know a few numbers regarding sales and operating expenses, and we also know rough numbers for the total amount of money being spent in/on/by the anime industry in America. We know a how much some companies are asking for their titles, etc.

I think it's a fair estimate to say that anime sales are somewhere between $600 million and $750 millions (although I've heard numbers as high as $1 billion?), plus a bit more, perhaps, with Pokemon, Yugioh, and DBZ.. all of which sell fairly significant amounts of DVDs and still carry a large following (notice YGH Movie's opening weekend box office).

IIRC I also read that the Japanese government tallied $4 billion in licensing agreements between Japanese anime companies and American companies in 2003. That, of course, includes many things other than the anime videos themselves, such as Pokemon beach towels, various trading card games, etc.

The anime industry is, despite a massive growth in fansubs and bootlegging, still growing double-digits percentages per year. The manga industry is doing even better.

Who's doing the best? ADV, Bandai, Geneon. Take your pick, depending on what you're looking at and for what length of time.

I have a question related to this topic:

Does anyone know what the wages are for translation careers in anime and manga businesses? Is the competition for those occupations fierce right now? Can someone provide me with some sites too if possible?

Thanks! Smile
