i've been wondering for a while if Kenshin is of Japanese descent. The biggest sign in favor of this not being true, is his red hair, and it dawned on me while i was playing Skies of Arcadia Legends for the Gamecube that this may be true. For those of you who dont know, in the game the charaters arrive to the continent Yafutoma which is the equivalent to eastern Asia. When the protagonists first encounter the natives, they (the native) first take note of the one of the female protagonist hair color (she was a red head). It may sound a bit stereotypical to think that a person without black hair cant be of east asian descent but i cant help but wonder if Kenshin's hair was only meant to distinguish him or if it really implied that he was not Japanese. If any of you out there know the answer to this question , please post and even if you dont, voice your opinion Wink

I always thought he was of Asian desent and that Kenshin like most Asian characters in anime just had funny colored hair.... like the entire Inner Senshi cast of Sailor Moon is suppose to be Asian yet only one of them actually has black hair...

Oro?

I believe Kenshin's character was based on a real person (can't remember his name, unfortunately), but yes, I believe Kenshin is a real Japanese person, in the show at least, and the red hair is just an exaggeration.

I know that he is a real person, as are some other characters. Hajime Saitou is a real person, as is Fukaba(the secretary of the interior guy spoiler[who gets assassinated by sojiro]). There are others as well, but I can't remember any of them right now. But I read about them on the dvd linear notes on my kenshin dvd's.

From what I've read, Kenshin was partially based on an assassin named Gensai Kawakami, who was reportedly especially successful because his effeminate appearance lulled his victims into complacency. spoiler[He was actually executed by the government on trumped up charges a few years before the time covered by the series, which obviously leads to the biggest historical inaccuracy of the story - Kenshin's very existence!]

Uhmmm... acctually, I think I may have heard something (may be completely inaccurate) that if in east Asian culture, if you had red or brown hair, then you were malnutritioned.

Now don't ask where I got that. =P

Aparantly the assasin Kenshin was based on was very small and was sometimes mistaken for a woman Laughing Not much has changed, has it.
By the way, this doesn't relate to the anime, but when does the Kyoto arc start in the manga?

Lone Wolf and Cub had said that some characters are based on real people. The link above talks about that.

I'm *sure* that one of the characters in Battle Royale (movie) has red hair...

Thanks. I was actually expecting it to start later, but it looks like next month I'll get to see it. To be honest, that was the only part of the TV series I liked.

Yeah...although I haven't seen any of the series (just up to vol 6 of the manga) from what I've heard, the first season had a lot of filler that wasn't in the manga...so that's probably why.

Yes LOTS of filler, almost to the point of annoyance. The Kyoto arc was brilliant, it even made Sano look cool which is nice in my book.

After Kyoto though the series suffered..Tales of the Meiji is just a big load of crap. It's a shame, because if they had just included the great parts of the manga, Rurouni Kenshin could have be a masterpiece of a series, instead we got one ok season, one awesome season, and one dismal season. Such is life though right?
