2032 is just Bubblegum Crisis (no year after it). Then it's Bubblegum Crash (three episodes). Then it's Bubblegum Crisis 2040. |

And then it's Bubblegum Crisis 2041. I really wonder what they're going to do with that one...

Bubblegum Crisis info? GLADLY!
Beyond being a not-too veiled homage to Blade Runner (Priss's band is named the Replicants, for the love of Naka {Yuji Naka-creator of Sonic}) Bubblegum Crisis was also the career jumping off point for both Kenichi Sonoda (who later went on to create the popular Gunsmith Cats manga/OAV) and one of the mecha designers went on to father a little revolutionary series called Tenchi Muyo. Honest! I forget who it was (not Taro Maki, I recall that). Seriously, though. Tenchi's creator was a lesser member of the animation staff. For proof, look at two things: Ryoko's face in the early OAV; she and Linna look nearly identical in facial shape and expression and Mihoshi's mecha suit in the first episode of Tenchi TV; it's admittedly nearly a direct copy of a Knight Saber hardsuit. While important by those standards alone, Crisis remains a yardstick of anime style long into its lifetime. Its music, action, and characters have proven more lasting than many of its other contemporary, more serious, series. Even the dub soundtrack has its high points (I think that Hurricane was redone well, Mr. Dandy was rancid though.) Nowadays, we take for granted a lot that Bubblegum Crisis brings to the table. Stellar highway chases? Got it. Giant evil corporation? Right here. (Microsoft before Microsoft, that's Genom) Honestly, though some say that it has been surpassed by its remake, Bubblegum Crisis 2040, that series had none of the charm, originality, or whimsical self-deprecating humor that has kept the original a perennial favorite amongst fans. Besides, Sylia Stingray drives a teched-up Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and runs a ladies' lingerie shop. How much cooler than that can you get? |

The only thing I can say about Bubblegum Crisis (OVA) is…watch 2040 instead. I know I know, there are plenty of people out there who prefer the original to the TV series and I apologize to all of you. You have to admit it though, the original was pretty disjointed and just seemed to be a bunch of episodes thrown together instead of a series.
I thought 2040 did a much better job of fleshing out (no pun intended) the characters and story line. I even liked the character designs better. I give the OVA due credit…it wasn’t bad, I just liked 2040 better. Message Ends, Saxton |

Indeed. Actually, if I remember correctly, we leave the year 2032 behind pretty early in the series. After the battle with Mason (episode 3), the subtitle actually changes from "Megatokyo 2032" to "Megatokyo 2033". Crash's subtitle is "Megatokyo 2034".
And there's another new one on the way called Parasite Dolls, or something, that's completely different isn't there? Lessee if I can pull up that article... Eureka! animenewsnetwork.com/article.php?id=2607
Couldn't find it right away... It's not cataloged very well. Thank Dan42 for the Encyclopedia.
And of course, we can't forget the original sidestory Tales of the AD Police, and Tokyo 2040's sidestory AD Police... I'm anxiously awaiting the DVD rerelease of the former myself (to complete my collection
I'd say that they each served their purpose. Tokyo 2040 was a TV series, whereas the original was a traditional one-episode-per-tape OVA. Further to the original's credit, I think that its episodic nature is one of its charms. It uses that quality to its advantage to show humanity interacting and even interfusing with technology for many different reasons and in many different ways. In my opinion, that is part of the reason why the original series so often seems to surpass the cheap-mecha-action blow-stuff-up stereotype, and why Tokyo 2040 seems to fall victim to it more often than not. Granted, the original isn't nearly as pretty (in every sense of the term) or as modern as 2040. But the grittiness of it all goes hand in hand with the type of series BGC is; and the dated pop culture is really just a matter of mindset. I supposed it could be compared to how theater buffs continue to sing the praises of Westside Story, despite the fact that the culture it reflects is so defunt that the play has almost no practical value anymore. I agree wholeheartedly that they are both good series in their own right, but I think it's certainly worth noting that they are good for entirely different reasons. |

Not Quite. 2040 is not a sequel to BGC (2032) and BGC! (2034), it's an altertane re-telling. |

I wasn't really saying it was a sequel....just the sequential order. BGC takes place first in 2032, then BGC! takes place in 2034, then BGC2040 takes place in 2040.
I haven't seen 2040 yet to have an opinion on it. But I really liked BGC. |

True, but at the same time, you could say that 2040 takes place earlier than 2034. The story actually takes place earlier in the career of the Knight Sabers.
You should. It doesn't have quite all the raw feeling of the original, but it was better planned (seng as how it was actually completed this time around) and features some interesting explantions for the questions left unanswered in the first series. Of course, the anwers of 204 don't necesarlly hold true for 2032-34 |

I watched the first episode of the original and decided that life is too short to waste on this stuff. Then I watched the first tape of 2040 because it was written by the guy who did Serial Experiments Lain. Ehn.
I mean hey, enjoy what you enjoy, but c'mon. I could forgive it for playing a part in the creaton of (eccchhh) Tenchi, but judging from the first episode, it was nothing but formula, formula, formula sprinkled with genre accoutrements. Isn't that what's wrong with anime? |

Going back to 2040 Vs. OAV... I didd like 2040 a bit better because it had more of a story. HOWEVER, one of my favorite anime episodes (BTW, we need to start a list of favorite anime episodes one of these days) is Double Vision from the OAV

I really wasn't happy with the first couple of episodes of 2040... it did start out, as you say, formula, formula, formula. But I found that it improved as it went on because the actual story cohesiveness was very good. Perhaps it was because, as a BGC fan in general, it was very nice to finally get a series that addressed to one biggest problem with the original. Unfortunately it also lacked the biggest strengths of the original. Originality and raw emotional content. |
