Well, its obvious that Bandai has been milking his ideas for decades. But does Tomino actually get any of that money? I suspect he doesn't, which is really a shame.

I don't see why he wouldn't. I mean, his and Hajime Yatate's names are one of the first things you see in every intro, right? I would guess he gets at least a little money, but I'm not very familiar with how copyrights, royalties, and all of that stuff work anyway Razz.

If anything I would think that the group known as Hajime Yatate would get alot. But Sunrise and Bandai Visual must give some cash to Tomino. After all if it weren't for him Bandai wouldn't have a cow to milk. Wink

Tomino makes his money although Gundam staff at Sunrise probably has made more money in the past couple of years.

While he is still highly involved in Gundam and it's activities, I think his input is growing less influencial then it was in the 80's and early 90's.

After Mobile Suit V Gundam finished airing 1994, Bandai celebrated Gundam's 15th anniversary by annoucing 3 Alternate Universes.

G Gundam by Yasuhiro Imagawa

Gundam Wing by Masashi Ikeda

Gundam X by Shinji Takamatsu

Although all 3 were considered a success
*despite X getting cancelled, and the controvercies over G Gundam*

Tomino had little to do with any of these and didn't see any actual work until 1999 with Turn A as a part of Gundam's 20th Anniversery.

I'm sure he saw money from all the A.U's and U.C. sidestory merchandise that was created during his 5 years of doing nothing involving Gundam but I think those 5 years weakend his influence with Bandai regarding his input on Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny.

To me, Tomino feels more like a spokesperson then an actual creator of Gundam anymore in this day and age. I'm not sure how he feels about Gundam Seed *I've just found out he's unhappy with it* and I know he despises G Savior but Bandai went ahead with both ideas regardless. Mad

However, It seems he's back in action with work on the Zeta movies which will show if he's still got the magic touch.

Laughing *Doesn't want Tomino turning into a full fledged George Lucas* Laughing

"Hajime Yatate" is a pen name used to describe a collection of creative heads at Sunrise. Instead of listing each one involved in a particular series, they simply put "Hajime Yatate." Tomino, being a notably more prominent figure, has his name separate. Or so the story goes, anyway.

All I've heard is that he didn't like how Sunrise made a new alternate timeline right as he had tied everything together with Turn-A. Understandable.

That's not true.

Turn A Gundam was never meant to be a Gundam series. The only reason why it was made into a Gundam show was so he could get it made. He's just mad that they are destroying his creation

and Yes Tomino still gets royalties and always will since he is the creator of the show

Hmmm, never heard it like that. It was my understanding that Syd Mead join the team because it was a Gundam project. If Tomino didn't want it to be a Gundam series then I would think he would just call the series Gundam, made it yet another alternate time line, and left it at that. Instead he goes on to make references and connections to past Gundam shows. Besides, I doubt Tomino of all people needed to use Gundam to get a project done. He's one of the fathers of the giant robot genre, he's had several non Gundam shows produced (IDEON, Dunebine, Brainpowered, L-Gaim, the list goes on), and has always been an extremely popular creator, what's another giant robot series?

He said it in an Animerican Interview about 4 years ago or so. It's in the issue where they did the huge feature about brain powered and what Tomino was up to. He said Turn A was never meant to be Gundam but became one because it was the only way Sunrise would let it get off the drawing board and apporve the show.
