There is nothing in the Encyclopedia on it.
Can anyone tell me anything about this title or where I can find some info? Its an old 70s manga that was done by Kazuo Koike ('Lone Wolf and Cub'). Translated title is "Lady Snowblood", and the "Princess Blade" is also an adaptation of this story. |

You will find a little info about this manga (authors, magazine of publication, film adaptation) in that page of my own site:
http://www.caluchanche.netfirms.com/1970_1974.html and a lot of good comments (but with some errors) in http://www.artsofthesamurai.com/LWC/HTML/movies.html |

Thanks for the response. It seems this title really is rather unknown outside of Japan. *sigh*

This is the cover of the last film adaptation of the manga (2001).
The 1973-74 version is better, of course... This is the video cover of the chinese version (uncredited) of the story, famous film "Broken Oath" (1977) starring Angela Mao Ying and choreographed by now famous Yuen (Matrix) Woo-Ping.

Are the two older flicks just 'based on' the manga, or do they actually sort of follow the original story?

Sorry! I have not "read" the manga yet...! I cannot tell you...
As far I know they are a faithful adaptation of the original manga... More than the 1977 and 2001 versions, of course!!!! In fact I think these 2 first films are so faithful as other live-action movie adaptations of Koike's works in the first 70s, as "Goyokiba" (by Kanda), "Bohachi Bushido" (by Kojima & Fujio) or "Oniwaban" (by Yamasaki & Nagayasu)... |

Yea I thought I recognized the cover. Taht's princess blade, I didn't know it was an adaption. Pretty good movie, comparable to Azumi. |

Although Koike & Kamimura appear in the credits as original authors of "Princess Blade", actually the film is a very very very free adaptation of the original manga. I think they only respected about the 20 % of the story.
(although I must admit its star Yumiko Shaku is very cute...) CENSORED Last edited by calros on Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:35 am; edited 1 time in total |

It would be nice if it was brought over here. The original movie is a classic.

Nah. It fits the character better. "Arg! Sword...caught in hair again!"
I'd like to see it. At least to see how it compares to the story of the newer one. |

ADV has Princess Blade on dvd, and Animeigo has Lady Snowblood on dvd. Quentin Tarantino made an "homage" to the series by "borrowing" the plot for Kill Bill. Oh, and Yumiko Shaku's ugly and an awful actress, but at least she was passable in Godzilla X MechaGodzilla.

Yumiko Shaku... ugly
Look at this...! CENSORED[snip - completely unnecessary] more photos in CENSORED [edit: carlos, please stop posting so many images. This makes it hard for people with slower connections to access this page. Also, we don't need bikini photos on ANN, because some people browse this place at work. Thanks. -b] Last edited by calros on Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:40 am; edited 1 time in total |
