Yeah, I don't blame Sadamoto for being burnt out on Evangelion. We're coming up on 20 years of plugsuits and Rei looking sad. Anyone would get tired after just five. (At least I would.)

I can totally see where Sadamoto's coming from on Eva fry; he had to redesign pretty much every character for 3.0, while finishing the manga! That's a lot of work! Anyway, I love him and I hope he'll get to work on a really refreshing new project soon!

Reeeeally curious whether he's going to work on Blue Uru and FLCL2.

well lets be honest here.. the Evangelion Manga just recently wrapped up. Considering the manga started way back when the TV series first aired 1996 and just recently wrapped up.. he was known for taking his time..

Sadamoto is one of my favorite artists.. known mostly for Eva but also well known for other Gainax titles... The FLCL remake while interesting could potentially kill the original series and its appeal. Lets hope not.

His work on the Evas is impressive, to state the obvious.

One of my all-time favorite pieces of his work is a poster he did for Nadia. She's wearing her episode 1 hat and dress, and standing out in a wide field of tall grass as a spaceship flies by overhead. Such a wonderful, imaginative scene.

I also think he's one of the best artists I've ever seen at drawing expressive hands. Somehow, he just gets so much across with them.

The fans are important, of course. Fans want their series to come back, as in the case of FLCL, and it's great they can fulfill their desires.

It is interesting, in a certain sense, to see it being said that the planned FLCL sequel accords with the wishes of fans. I recall that the response from aficionados, especially from those of a more vocal bent, suggested otherwise. Fortunately it seems that Sadamoto is quite able to identify the likely motives behind the project.

The whole interview reads like Sakamoto is just sitting there smoking a cigarette, with a bottle of bourbon, bags under his eyes, just trying to stay awake.

It's a franchise I don't really want to work on anymore at this point

Yeah, it looks like Anno doesn't want to, either, if you've seen Rebuild 3.33.

I have a feeling the people who took on the Rebuild movies completely regret starting the project by this point. "The fans are forcing us to do what now? F***. All right, I guess if it sells."

Yeah, I think he was kind of hungover... Rolling Eyes still a great conversation.

One of my favorite artists.

Even though he also wants to work on "new" things (I'd love to see one of the few strong creator/directors who can still push a project use his art for a new anime-original TV series after all this time), I really hope they get him on board for the new FLCL, it just won't look right without his art style. Smile

This is a rather unusual interview. His responses are really different from what we usually get from Japanese industry insiders, who usually dodge the "troublesome" questions and try to give a positive outlook of whatever it is they're doing. This feels a lot dryer and to the point, and extremely pragmatic. Honestly the guy sounds like he's totally done with the job at this point. I wonder if he won't get in trouble for basically admitting he's sick of drawing EVAs and that no one really knows what Anno's thinking anymore. It's kind of discouraging to hear such a talented person feeling so dispassioned about the work he's done tbh.

Alien 2 didn’t destroy Alien and Aliens.
Highlander 2 didn’t destroy Highlander.
They are still the classics.
The FLCL sequel whether good or bad will not destroy the original FLCL series.
On a personal note, I still greatly love El Hazard: The Magnificent World, despite the monster that is El Hazard 2.

I kinda feel bad for him at this point. A 54 year old guy who's tired of doing the same thing for years and resigned himself to doing phone games. I wish he took more of the path of Hideaki Anno and transitioned to doing his own stuff.

The manga started in 1994, and the anime in 1995.

I really love Sakamoto's artwork. I always look forward his seeing more of his work.

I really enjoyed this interview. Sadamoto sounded like a veteran to me, that is realistic and mostly to the point. His appreciation of Gainax being supportive of their artists was enlightening. I can only imagine the burnout he feels for having worked on Eva for so long. It wouldn't surprise me if he's tired of being asked about it by this point too kind of like how Mamoru Oshii is sick of being asked about GITS and the Matrix. Laughing Wink

I'd be preaching to the choir in that I both like his art and this interview paints him as really tired at this point (working on a manga for 20 years like that, I'd imagine.) so all I'll say is that I wish him the best in his future endeavors.
