"Ze flies in the sky, shoots down enemies relentlessly, and commands the force. Zir name is Tanya Degurechaff."

Ok, which joker wrote this? Laughing

EDIT: Awwwwwwwwwwwwww shit LOL. My bad, they really were using neutral pronouns, thought it was a cheeky mock-up of the German accent.

It's not about being "relevant," it's about using language correctly. If I point at a schoolbus and say "that's a potato," I'm being just as accurate as if I point to an agender person and say "he" or "she."

I'm all for using gender-neutral pronouns, but why the switch to "she" in the character profile then?

First of all gender neutral pronoun is a made up for the sake of being politically correct and to not offend anybody who doesn't identify themselves within the two binary genders. Even to consider gender neutral pronouns accurate in any literary sense is fallacy.

Tanya refers to herself as female and lets others as well. Come on, ANN. I know it's important to be progressive, but this is silly. If you tried calling Tanya "ze" or "zir", you would probably invoke her wrath.

I could see gender neutral pronouns being used to cover up for the fact that Tanya is spoiler[actually a reincarnated salaryman placed in this era due to "god" willing it] that being said I did think it was some sort of weird spelling error until I thought about it. Also so far this series is the best selling series of the winter season so far in Japan if one goes by some pre-order sales.

Anime Spotlight is generally handled by an editorial staff exterior to ours and thus we didn't handle the frontpage blurb text for it, but I agree this was not a particularly logical choice for the text and have changed it to reflect what's actually in the show.

I didn't write it and neither did anyone on my team, but it's been fixed. Thanks for alerting me to this.

Didn't mean to throw ANN under the bus at all in regards to that. Definitely a minor nitpick, and I appreciate the high quality of ANN's articles in general. Smile

I will keep in mind that the editorial staff is exterior as well; mix ups happen and it's no biggie. It's understandable why some may think this a proper place to use those pronouns (which I don't have any implicit issue with) due to the circumstances.

Thank you for listening, Zac!

Well at least a voice of reason has appeared. There is such a thing as being too politically correct and this situation was one of them i think. There is nothing wrong with being any of the whole gender neutral/fluid/nonbinary or whatever people are calling it but forcing its special sub culture language on everyone is just a bridge too far. The whole pronoun thing should be used when the person wanting to be called that way asks to be. Until then they simply dont exist. Kind of like how the dictionary sees it. There is nothing wrong with a counter culture or movement as long as its not some kind of harmful cult or something but forcing those values on everyone is wrong and really doesnt have a place in an anime editorial.

No issues are made of Tanya being referenced as a she. So she is a she. If there was some alternate pronoun usage going on in the canon of the show then sure by all means go for it.

http://boards.4chan.org/a/thread/152338234#p152338234 it's from an archived 4chan thread so take it with a grain of salt but yeah there have been several threads either extoling or decrying this fact over there. Along with it being number 8 on Amazon Japan if this screen cap is still correct.

Again sales may fluctuate wildly but yeah I was not expecting this to sell that well.[/img]
