I mean, the article says the character was inspired by top gun directly. I have actually seen quite a few top gun parodies in anime(Gundam 0083 basically being the closest thing to a topgun anime). I wonder what the reaction will be in Japan. It does make me laugh that Japan likes a movie that was designed to be military propaganda though.

This could be a meta-reference over the fact that Rooster, Goose's son, will be voiced by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese dub.
