Just started listening. Never thought i'd hear anyone talk about The Boondocks on here. Just a heads up, Season 4 so far is really hit and miss. The Breaking Bad parody episode had some great satire of the black hair care industry and is the best episode so far.
Also started watching Steven Universe after finding out what the funny cartoon Hope uses for her twitter avatar is. It's fantastic so far and i love it so much. It's ridiculous how much i love that show. The characters are great and i enjoy the writing a lot. Also yeah, season 2 of Korra was pretty meh. The Wan episodes notwithstanding. I did enjoy the latter half of the season better but episodes 1-6 were horrid. |

Incest is a common literally trope used all over the world throughout history. From Greek Mythology to Shakespere, it's one of the classics because it leads to so many storytelling possibilities
 And since Japan adores the Shakespereian tragedy-style of storytelling, makes sense to see it there.
Dunno how an anime can to 'too anime' Maybe a better word is 'too Japanese' Seems like all those hits in America are anime that features a Caucasian setting instead of a Japanese one. Bebop, Titan, Trigun. Seems like a case of ethnocentrism or xenophobia in play in what show can find mainstream success here.

I agree, the 1st episode in particular felt like a retread of the R-Kelly and Usher episodes. Also Jojoshi Powerhour FTMFW |

Yeah, I was not thrilled about that since we've essentially seen that episode already. This season has its moments, but it definitely dropped off in terms of quality. At this point I'm mostly just waiting for Stinkmeaner's appearance. |

The first season of Korra could've been good, it feels like a few mis-steps brought that story crashing down.
Korra is presented as an unbalanced character. Somebody who lacks spirituality and somebody who solves all her problems with violence. And she's in a city that is imbalanced and tearing itself apart. If the bender, anti-bender story was presented with a little more nuance. If Korra realized that her role is an ambassador role and this wasn't a conflict you could punch away, then we could've had a great story that is faithful to the themes of the previous seasons while breaking new ground. Instead Korra starts off a spoiled reckless coward and bully, and ends that way. Ah well, enough with the nerd ramble. At least the animation was nice. |

I always found it odd to see people scoff at children's anime then turn around and unironically try to discuss literary integrity of shows like Stephen Universe. Not just specifically here, but elsewhere as well. I mean, I suppose if you're American you'll have more attachment to American shows, but it always seems a bit hypocritical that cartoons always gets a free pass. Especially if we're talking shows like Pretty Cure and Doraemon which are a bit more important to the animation industry for their genre defining merits compared to random Cartoon Network stuff.

I have mixed feelings about the lack of Precure on western TV and streaming. On one hand, it would be wonderful if little American girls could experience Precure and love it the way I loved Sailor Moon as a little girl. On the other, Precure already has more than its fair share of creepy fans and I want to keep as much distance between it and the culture that produced Bronies as possible.
I think the window for making it work over here passed years ago, though. The first season was dubbed and aired in Canada in 2009 but didn't seem to go anywhere. Now it's just too long and those first few seasons are a little bit too dated. It's a shame; if someone had taken a chance on it years and years ago, it could be huge over here, and incredibly important in a time when animated heroines are few and far between. |

I don't really follow with how Season 4 of the Boondocks has been more sub par compared to previous seasons. The first three seasons alone already had episodes where the same plot or the same character or relation to that character was used. We've had a few Stinkmeaner episodes, a handful of episodes where Ed Wuncler the 3rd and Gin Rummy were in their robbery hi-jinks and and two-three episodes regarding a woman Robert Freeman is dating. That's not to say that makes the first 3 seasons any less great to watch. But at the same time, I'm not getting why all of a sudden that's a bad thing now. It doesn't bother me personally and I find this season just as amusing so far as the others. But to others, is it just that everyone's getting tired of the idea of the Boondocks occasionally even having recurring concepts with the same characters in some episodes and season 4 is just where everyone's tolerance is wearing thin? Or is it something else I'm not aware of? |

It's expected different places having different tastes of course. People also prefer stuff they can more relate to, like Japanese relate to high school years as the best days of their lives. Though something exotic can capture people's attention as well, as Westerners are mystified by ninjas like Naruto, while Japanese are enamored with pirates like One Piece. |

I'm only about halfway through the show, but I don't think anyone was saying Steven Universe should be held up as a piece of literature. Just that it's, essentially, a fun show that's well written. I was glad to hear Zac mention Utena in the same breath as Steven Universe. The way Pearl moved in the fight scenes in "Steven the Sword Fighter" felt like they were pulled right from Revolutionary Girl Utena, and was actually the reason I finally sat down and watched The Apocalypse Saga.
Okay, but 99% of anime is not Shakespeare.
If you can't tell when something is "too anime," you might be watching too much anime... By the way, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and less so Tenchi Muyo, were fairly popular when they aired, and all three have very Japanese sensibilities. |
