150 million+ units sold worldwide since console premiered in 2000

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced on its official Japanese website for the PlayStation 2 video game console that it stopped selling PlayStation 2 units as of Friday. The only new PlayStation 2 consoles remaining in Japan are the ones that are left over in stores.

Sony released the PlayStation 2 in Japan in March 2000 as a successor to the original PlayStation. The console has since seen subsequent slimmer and more energy-efficient models. Sony has sold more than 150 million of the consoles worldwide.
