Bite Kyubey's Head Off at Sega's Madoka Magica Cafe This Month

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Still holding a grudge against Kyubey, the disgustingly cute cat-like character from Puella Magi Madoka Magica? You will soon be able to bite that smug little face off when a collaboration cafe debuts at Sega Collabo Cafe Akihabara 2 in Tokyo this month.

The cafe will be a collaboration with the smartphone role-playing game Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Gaiden, which launched for iOS and Android devices on August 22 after being delayed from May and July. The cafe will run from February 24 to April 8, and advance reservations will be required.

The first wave of the menu will run from February 24 to March 9. The drink menu will offer 10 character-inspired drinks for 600 yen (about US$6) each, and each drink will come with a character coaster. Visitors will be able to use the drink coasters and a camera in the cafe to access a magical girl gacha AR feature.

The food menu will include a Hamburg steak and fried rice set for 1,200 yen (US$11) each. The dessert menu will offer Iroha and Madoka's Deluxe Parfait, Small Kyubey Parfait, and Candy's Parfait for 1,000 yen (about US$9) each. Food orders will come with "deluxe big coasters" featuring Iroha and Madoka, while dessert orders will come with one of three "deluxe coasters" depending on the parfait ordered.

The second wave of the menu will run from March 10 to 23, followed by the third wave from March 24 to April 8.

The cafe's item shop will begin offering 11 varieties each of tin badges and microfiber towels and nine varieties of acrylic charms on February 24. New designs of the same merchandise will debut on March 17. People who spend at least 2,000 yen (US$19) at the item shop will receive one of three varieties of clear files from February 24 to March 16.

Sega game centers will also run a related campaign from March 3 to April 8.

From March 3 to 16, 500-yen (US$5) UFO catcher game machines will offer 10 varieties of character clear files. The machines will offer a different set of 10 clear files from March 17 to April 8.

In addition, separate UFO catchers will begin offering four varieties of acrylic stand panels on March 3. People who visit Sega game centers will be able to receive special postcards beginning on March 3. A Twitter campaign is also offering three complete sets of both sets of clear files.

Sega game centers and Sega Collabo Cafe Akihabara 3 are currently running similar campaigns to mark the February 2 birthday of Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-'s Rem and Ram. The game center event debuted on January 27 and runs until February 25. The cafe event is running from January 27 to March 11.

The first Madoka Magica cafes debuted in 2011, the same year that the original television anime premiered. Good Smile Company's Good Smile Café branch in Taipei, Taiwan ran a cafe inspired by the magical girl series in 2012.
