This Sumo-Sized Isekai Manga Isn't What You'd Expect

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Whether its a time-slip into the prehistoric era or adventuring to a fantasy toilet, the isekai genre has a wealth of variation behind its simple "transported to another world" premise. Authors are having fun sticking to the tried and true adventuring scenarios and playing with expectations to tackle fantasy world economics or surviving as a lowly spider.

Manga creator Fumino Hayashi (Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days) is putting another twist on the story trend in Isekai Chanko: Yokozuna Mokuzen ni Shōkansaretan daga, a super-sized comedic fantasy isekai story on the Comic Life STORIA website.

The story stars two-time winning sumo wrestler Takarayama. After his successes, he believes that he'll be promoted to yokozuna, the highest rank in sumo wrestling. Instead of receiving his promotion, Takarayama finds himself summoned to another world by magic using sisters Elise, Iris, and Franca, and they don't know how to send him back. In the mean time, the magical trio are hungry, so Takarayama starts making a pot of chankonabe (a traditional stew that sumo wrestlers eat).

Hayashi previously created the manga Kōkakuka Aikyō Sae Kyō no Ichiban (Sumo Fan Aikyo Sae's Best Day), a story about an office lady that loves sumo wrestling.
