Shirokuma Café Manga Returns From Hiatus

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Manga returned in Saturday's issue of Shogakukan's Flowers mag

Manga artist Aloha Higa announced via her Twitter account on Saturday that the September issue of Shogakukan's Flowers manga anthology, which was released on Saturday, marked the resumption of her Shirokuma Café manga. Higa announced in May that the manga would be put on indefinite hiatus.

An anime adaptation of Shirokuma Café began airing this April. Higa had posted in mid-May that a contract regarding her and the adaptation had yet been signed, and as such, she had not received "a single yen" from the adaptation. Higa had said in May that for approximately the last six months, she had been unable to directly voice her thoughts on the anime adaptation to its production company despite multiple and various requests. She then said that she finally received a chance to do so after announcing the manga's hiatus and having an intellectual property specialist draft paperwork which she then sent.

According to Higa, the editorial department overlooking the adaptation took full responsibility for the problems and apologized to her. Additionally, Higa noted in May that the company's media division is now handling the title. Higa is now checking over the anime's character designs and scripts as a part of its production process. Higa had also noted in May that she wanted to remove herself from her old situation in which she only heard news about the anime adaptation through the internet.

Shirokuma Café is a gag comedy manga that follows the daily life of penguins, grizzly bears, and other animals at a café run by a polar bear. Crunchyroll is streaming the Shirokuma Café anime under the name Polar Bear's Café in various countries outside of Japan as it airs.
